CLAIRE HALPIN

Claire Halpin

"My practice explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories. The current artworks are developed from my research into surveillance and attempts to navigate the terrain from the mass clandestine surveillance programmes to the use of drones in unmanned warfare. The work uses imagery from newspaper photos, surveillance, maps and from the canon of art history of Byzantine and Early Renaissance. I am influenced by the complex organisation of space and time in the compositions of Early Renaissance paintings where the narrative unfolds so that more than one thing can be seen to be happening in the picture plane at once.

The themes in the work concern the use of imagery and how we perceive and interpret images depending on how they are painted and how the context in which we view images influences our reading of them. I strive to create beautiful paintings that raise questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting, photography, and the media in documenting future history.

The techniques and processes employed range from traditional form and materials of icon painting to oil painting, drawing, video and installation."

On 16 April 2021, IMMA, the Irish Museum of Modern Art, announced that that they had acquired 3 paintings by the artist. Click here to find out more about these works
