Eoin Flynn - Surface Tensions

Surface Tensions

(In response to David Fox's border paintings in 'An Altered Land',
Olivier Cornet Gallery, Dublin, 2019.)

If we ignore the signs,
the sans-serif stipulations that shepherd us
from KM to MPH and back again,
then nothing changes.
Except the tone thrown up by tyres.

A bassier note tips us off
to a change of state.
A pitch back up
as camber and cruddy quality herald
a homecoming of sorts.

Surface plays the soundtrack
to these forays over imaginary lines.

And that surface,
much as it appears black and white,
Is always instead shades of grey
daubed with orange and green.
Now with new slogans of old thinking.

If we ignore the signs, the danger is
we arrive back where we never should have been.

Eoin Flynn.
