Join us for a series of descriptive and discursive exchanges, where we'll share, create and .... break.

In the context of Miriam McConnon's show ' Common Fractures ' at Europa Gallery , Dublin, a special workshop with educator Jenny Papasotiriou will take place

From 14:30 to 17:30
Saturday 28 March & 9 May 2026.

Free but booking is preferred. Please email olivier@oliviercornetgallery.com or text 0872887261 to reserve a place.

The workshop will include:

- Approx. one hour in front of the works

- Approx. 20min outdoors in the street for a street exploration and visual collection

- Re connecting with the works and producing a piece or writing.

- Sharing our individual explorations and unpacking the narratives.

The workshop is anticipated to last three hours, but provisions will be made in case some of the attendees need to leave earlier.

OPW acquires artworks from Olivier Cornet Gallery

Work by Mary A. Fitzgerald, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Daniel Lipstein joins OPW State Art Collection

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that the OPW acquired 3 works from our gallery during Dublin Gallery Weekend 2025 .

It is always a privilege for us at the OCG to see work that we promote join a prestigious National Collection such as the OPW State Art Collection. The 3 works in question are:

The Fancy by Mary A. Fitzgerald , a beautiful abstract painting in homage to Yeats' painting ‘About to Write a letter’, 1935, oil on canvas, 61x91cm, collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin. Mary's work was part of our group show Ode to Giants , an exhibition which we launched on the 7th of November 2025 as part of Dublin Gallery Weekend 2025.
Spirit Walking Towards Light by Daniel Lipstein, a dreamy work which was part of the artist's solo show Self Portrait with a Pet and a Bathtub which we had the pleasure of hosting at the gallery in October last year.
An ghaoth aniar / This too will pass X by Eoin Mac Lochlainn , a sumptuous watercolour from the artist's solo show An ghaoth aniar / This too will pass which was opened by Catherine Connolly TD (and now President of Ireland) at our gallery in September last year.

Favourite artworks at Olivier Cornet Gallery in 2025

"When I first discovered the gallery’s storage area, many works caught my eye, but none like..."

Each year, with our initiative ' My Favourite artwork at Olivier Cornet Gallery , interns and volunteers take a closer look at artworks from the gallery’s stockroom and reflect on the pieces that spoke most strongly to them.

Six members of team OCG in 2025, namely Enrico Geremia, Lajla Dizdar, Louis-Jean Vannoye, Servane Peffer, Camille Lisonbee and Abi Keogh — share their favourite work and what it revealed to them in the process.

Enrico Geremia reflects on Shadows on Soil (Fall Irregardless) by Bart O’Reilly , a small acrylic painting whose soft stains on raw canvas evoke natural processes and a sense of suspended time. Drawing on the artist’s background and a poem connected to the work, Geremia explores how abstraction can feel both intimate and expansive, inviting viewers to inhabit their own interpretations.

Lajla Dizdar writes about Dunes, Sea Bindweed and Dunes, Sea Holly by Yanny Petters , captivated by the artist’s use of the rare verre églomisé (reverse painting on glass) technique. She highlights how the deep black backgrounds make the botanical forms glow with life, from the organic, twisting vines of the bindweed to the vertical strength of the sea holly, deepening her appreciation for nature’s overlooked beauty.

Louis-Jean Vannoye focuses on Irises by Conrad Frankel , drawn to the way the vibrant oil painting balances fragility and resilience. He highlights the artwork’s rich visual details — from the light refracting through the glass of water to the textured background — and interprets the irises’ posture and colour as symbols of life emerging in challenging surroundings, reflecting on themes of cyclicality, strength and rebirth.

Servane Peffer shares her response to Sumud by Eoin Mac Lochlainn , a charcoal and watercolour work that initially attracted her with its striking colours but ultimately moved her through its emotional depth and human resonance. She reflects on how Sumud is part of the artist’s broader project remembering lives affected by conflict and how the blurred, expressive face in the work stirred empathy, sadness and compassion — underscoring art’s power to evoke deep feeling and connection.

Camille Lisonbee considers A Cypriot story of displacement by Miriam McConnon , describing how the work’s layered interplay of image and text distills the artist’s personal and historical narratives of displacement. Lisonbee notes how the subtle combination of portraiture, map fragments and handwritten script creates space for reflection on memory, belonging, movement and loss — a poignant meditation on identity shaped by place and experience.

Abi Keogh responds to Peter’s Armour by Miriam McConnon with a focus on storytelling, empathy and lived experience. Keogh discusses how the imagined “armour” in this oil painting was built from objects brought by a young man forced to flee his home in Famagusta, Cyprus, and how the work gives voice to his history of displacement. Through this visual representation of personal belongings, the piece reinforces the enduring relevance of narratives of forced migration and human resilience.

OCG announces its schedule of exhibitions for 2026

An exciting year for the Olivier Cornet Gallery and its artists...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce its programme of exhibitions for 2026:

Extra-muros:

23 March - 10 May 2026: Miriam McConnon at The Europa Gallery, Dublin , Common Fractures , a solo show curated by Olivier Cornet by invitation of and in collaboration with the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland to mark the Cypriot presidency of the European Council during the first semester of 2026. The exhibition will be officially launched by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland, H.E. Mr. Louis Telemachou on Monday the 23rd of March 2026. The show will be open to the public from the 24th of March until the 10th of May 2025.

For this exhibition McConnon’s work looks at Ireland and Cyprus’ shared history of colonialism, its consequences and the impact it had on the social and political evolution of both nations in its aftermath.

Objects such as a wedding dress, a military jacket, books and ancient ceramic vessels narrate the common elevation of religion, education and conflict in the post-colonial era of both nations.

The artist also refers to the mass emigration that befell both nations during and after their struggle for independence. These carefully chosen objects in her artworks are adorned with the patterns from the personal objects belonging to refugees who have been currently displaced due to war.

Miriam has been interviewing displaced families and young people for the last eight years, presenting their stories using personal objects that they brought with them on their journey to safety. In this new series of work she holds a mirror up to Cyprus and Ireland, nations that are the custodians of the edges of the EU’s borders in order to see their country’s past struggle to survive in the lives of the immigrant of today.

With Memorandum the Olivier Cornet Gallery presents an overview of all the shows that took place in its premises in 2025, revisiting 4 important solo shows that year: Symbols of Revival by Nickie Hayden, Springs Opens Forever In Eternity by Conrad Frankel, An ghaoth aniar/This too will pass by Eoin Mac Lochlainn, and Self Portrait with a Pet and a Bathtub by Daniel Lipstein. Other highlights include works from our Bloomsday/Summer group show 'Out of Lines', an homage to the Art Déco period as we celebrated the centenary of the first Art Déco exhibition held in Paris in 1925. Last but not least, our Dublin Gallery Weekend 2025 group show 'Ode to Giants', also an homage, but this time, to favourite pieces held in 3 Dublin museums, is well represented. A 'souvenir' exhibition as it were, but devoid of nostalgia and simply reaffirming the old adage that it's good to look back when it can help us move forward...

8 March 2026 - 12 April 2026: Vicky Smith, Gairdín Rós / Rose Garden (solo show)

Gairdín Rós comprises 7 paintings made during the first four years of motherhood that explore portraiture, performance in the domestic space, windows to new perspectives, the body and landscapes of old. New work developed during a two-week artist residency in June 2025 at Interface Inagh, Connemara, comprises figurative paintings of the artist in the physical landscape and 3 paintings on woollen blankets.

Vicky Smith's practice examines domestic scenes, moments of motherhood, intimacy and the everyday, informed by memories of her childhood. Her autobiographical paintings of family speak to the experience of tenderness and relationships. She trained at Crawford College of Art and Design, Goldsmiths College, University of London, Trinity College UCD and the National College of Art and Design.

With two exhibitions scheduled in March, the Olivier Cornet Gallery won't be participating in the Art Evolve Art Fair this year.

19 April 2026 - 17 May 2026: TBC

21 May - 14 June 2026: solo exhibition of new work by Conrad Frankel (More details to follow)

16 June – 27 July 2026: Thematic Bloomsday group show featuring new work by the gallery’s artists (theme TBD)

Early August : an exhibition hosted at the gallery in collaboration with MSF (more details to be announced soon)

29 August - 27 September 2026: Miriam McConnon, No Mirrors left in Gaza (solo show)
The work is based on the personal lives of families in Gaza, whom the artist has been in regular communication with over the past 16 months. The images that have informed the work are from the domestic rhythms of the families who battle to survive the genocide and famine.

A series of large charcoal works on paper document the narrative of multiple displacement of the Palestinian families over the last 18 months. It exposes the crumbling of security and a domestic reality.

Mundane domestic objects are elevated to precious and rare artifacts because they are the last remaining of their kind to survive the constant displacement and bombardment of the war on Gaza.

Miriam is one of many artists globally whose work ensures that the resilience of the Palestinian people will not be forgotten and their struggle to survive colonialism and genocide will be etched in the minds of future generations.

4 October 2026 - 1 November 2026: Sheila Naughton, Presence (solo show)
"An abstract painting is a presence that speaks silently to us. It can be 'felt' rather than 'read'. Initially, a painting is in dialogue with the artist, then with the viewer and finally, with the space it inhabits. It creates relationships - with the viewer, with other paintings or objects and with the space itself".

The exhibition will reflect the artist's interest in the nature of these relationships and how the viewer can engage with and bring meaning to abstraction.

5 November 2026 - 6 December 2026: group show in response to the 300th anniversary of Jonathan Swift's novel ‘Gulliver's Travels’ . Launching as part of Dublin Gallery Weekend 2026. An artists’ response to philosophical tales like Gulliver's Travels that use narratives and fantasy to explore complex ideas about human nature, society and politics.

My first artwork by gallerist Olivier Cornet

"My love for ceramics comes from that memorable summer of 1977..."

My first art acquisition?

I was about 11 years old when I spent some holidays with my aunt Mitou, uncle Louis and their son Stéphane in Juan Les Pins. We would go to the beach in the mornings and visit some villages in the afternoons. One day we went to the village of Vallauris, which in the 1950s was raised to the ranks of ceramic capital of France with the arrival of Picasso.

Anyway, on that summer day of 1977, we checked out many workshops and ateliers in the famous village but there was hardly anything I could afford. Still, I fell in love with this tiny earthenware ashtray by The Argonauts* which I was determined to buy as a gift for my parents. All my pocket money from the leather purse around my neck (trendy days) was gone, I could have filed for bankruptcy that day lol. 15 euro (or so) was a lot of money for an 11-year-old boy then!

My parents still have it and The Argonautes are now considered important ceramicists… French people who watch ‘Affaire Conclue’ on TV (the French ‘Deal or No Deal’) would be familiar with the name.

I was looking at the little cockerel (rooster for our American friends) today and thought I would write this note as I think this was the first artwork I have ever purchased. My love for ceramics comes from that memorable summer of 1977.

A ‘souvenir’ exhibition as it were, but devoid of nostalgia and simply reaffirming the old adage that it’s good to look back when it can help us move forward…

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Memorandum , our 2025-2026 winter group exhibition.

Artists: Annika Berglund, Hugh Cummins, Colin Eaton, Mary A. Fitzgerald, David Fox, Conrad Frankel, Nickie Hayden, Daniel Lipstein, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Miriam McConnon, Sheila Naughton, Bart O'Reilly, Yanny Petters, Kelly Ratchford and Vicky Smith.

This year, we decided to look back at the year gone by and pay tribute to our artists and their fantastic work, the unabated dedication to their craft and their ingenuity.

The exhibition surveys the 4 important solo shows that were held at the gallery: Symbols of Revival by Nickie Hayden , Springs Opens Forever In Eternity by Conrad Frankel , An ghaoth aniar/This too will pass by Eoin Mac Lochlainn , and Self Portrait with a Pet and a Bathtub by guest artist Daniel Lipstein .

The exhibition also includes works from our Bloomsday/Summer group show Out of Lines , an homage to the Art Déco period as we celebrated the centenary of the first Art Déco exhibition held in Paris in 1925.

Last but not least, our Dublin Gallery Weekend 2025 group show Ode to Giants , also an homage, but this time, to favourite pieces held in 3 Dublin museums, features very prominently in this winter group show.

Other highlights include David Fox 's The Ridge of Capard, which we showcased at the gallery in August as part of National Heritage Week 2025 . Yanny Petters, whose works created for both Ode to Giants and Out of Lines were sold, will present for the very first time at the gallery her recent series of gnarls in watercolour.

The show opens on Sunday 14 December 2025 and runs until 28 February 2026. We are closed from 21 December 2025 to 5 January 2026 included. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank our artists, visitors and customers for their continued support this year.

We would like to extend our thanks to our special guest speakers this year: the poet Rachael Hegarty who opened Nickie Hayden's show, the architect Joerg J. Berchtold who opened Conrad Frankel's show, Catherine Connolly TD -and now president of Ireland- who opened Eoin Mac Lochlainn's show, the artist and creativity researcher Catherine Barron who opened Daniel Lipstein's show and finally Christina Kennedy , Senior Curator and Head of Collections at IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art) who opened our group show Ode to Giants.

Notes about accompanying information in the show :

Works accompanied by a QR code sticker on the wall were part of the Ode to Giants tribute exhibition. Visitors can just scan the QR code to visit the page featuring the museum artwork the artist chose to respond to. They can also see the artists’ notes and reproductions of some of the original works in the black folder on the large table in the centre of the room.

Works from the four above-mentioned solo exhibitions are accompanied by a copy of the invite on the wall: visitors can scan the QR code on that carton to visit the page of the artist’s solo show. Works without any QR codes featured in our Out of Lines group show. However, visitors can scan the Memorandum QR displayed in the gallery and follow the link to that exhibition page where the artists have also documented their responses to the Art Déco theme. Relevant notes about this show also feature in the second part of the black folder too.

Artist Robert Russell elected Honory Member of the RHA

The Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, President and Members, announced the election of Robert Russell, as an Honorary Member, elected at the Assembly meeting held on 14th October, 2025.

‘ As Director of Graphic Studio Dublin, Robert Russell HRHA has championed Irish printmaking and nurtured generations of artists, making him a vital force in Ireland’s visual arts landscape .’ RHA

At the Olivier Cornet Gallery, we’ve had the privilege of exhibiting Robert’s work at the gallery on a couple of occasions: as part of our 2018 Bloomsday group show Drawing on Joyce and more recently, in 2023, in ‘ Safe Harbour ’, in collaboration with his life partner the artist Nickie Hayden .

Olivier also commissioned Robert to create a series of photo-intaglio prints based on the work of photographer François Bost for the critically-acclaimed show Chiens Bleus, Chiens Gris with the artist LEYHO.

Congratulations Robert Russell from all of us at the OCG!

We would also like to congratulate renowned poet and broadcaster Theo Dorgan and pioneering artist and printmaker Margaret Irwin West who have been elected as Honory Members at the same time as Robert.

Marking the Cypriot Presidency of the European Council in the first half of 2026...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that to mark the Cypriot Presidency of the European Council in the first semester of 2026, the European Parliament Liaison Office in Ireland has invited Olivier to produce an exhibition featuring new work by his artist Miriam McConnon who is based in Cyprus.

The exhibition, titled 'Common Fractures', will open at the Europa Gallery, 11 Chatham Street, Dublin 2, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Monday the 23rd of March 2026 when it will be officially launched by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Ireland, H.E. Mr. Louis Telemachou. At the opening, Sophia Papageorgiou will read a poem by the Cypriot poet Kyriakos Karneras.

Please note that the opening is BY INVITATION ONLY. The show will be available to the public from the 24th of March to the 10th of May 2026.

Miriam McConnon's new body of work looks at Ireland and Cyprus’ shared history of colonialism, its consequences and the impact it had on the social and political evolution of both nations in its aftermath.

A native of Dublin, Miriam McConnon has been represented by the Olivier Cornet Gallery since March 2016. As a happy coincidence, the exhibition at The Europa Gallery will mark one decade -to the exact month- of collaborations between the artist and her gallerist.

The artist's work is in many public collections: Central Bank, Nicosia, Cyprus; Electricity Supply Board (AIK), Nicosia, Cyprus; Municipal Art Gallery, Nicosia, Cyprus; Municipal Art Gallery, Limassol, Cyprus; Barclays Bank, Ireland; OPW State Art Collection, Ireland ; Wesley College, Dublin; RTE Television Network, Ireland; Our Lady's Hospice, Dublin, Embassy of Ireland, Nicosia, Cyprus (collection of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland) as well as private collections in Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Cyprus, UK, Ireland, Luxembourg, Australia, South Africa, Greece, Belgium and the USA.

Due to the non-commercial nature of the show at the Europa Gallery, the artist's work exhibited there cannot be sold from or through the venue there. Prices range from 550 Euro for the small 20x20cm oil paintings to 2,500.00 Euro for the large charcoal drawings.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to host a special conversation between Eoin Mac Lochlainn and the art historian and producer Jackie Ryan .

Jackie Ryan has garnered over 25 years of collaboration with Irish artists on projects, commissions, and exhibitions in Ireland and around the world. She has been following the artist Eoin Mac Lochlainn since the start of his career.

This conversation is taking place in the context of An ghaoth aniar / This too will pass , Eoin Mac Lochlainn's current solo show running here at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

The conversation will focus on the artist's current body of work while also looking back at this career to date: from abstract art to portrait and landscape, from a practice of oil painting to the almost-exclusive use of watercolour painting of late, the exploration of the artist's various themes of interest such as homelessness, the Irish diaspora , the Irish civil war and climate change, and in more general terms, maybe, the artist's deep historical inquiry, interlinked with personal interrogation and empathy.

Milestones in the career of the artist will also be discussed, such as the production of the Cogadh na gCarad video projected in the Garden of Remembrance and its later acquisition by the OPW – one of only two film works in their contemporary Irish Art collection.

"Self, pet and a bathtub is a triangle of elements arranged as a composition in this oil on linen painting whose title is also the title of the whole show.

The bathtub is from my locality at the fields around my studio in county Donegal where farmers arrange bathtubs arbitrarily on the landscape for their cows and bulls to drink from. Once an intimate function in a household now these are curious shapes in open spaces resembling alienation and corrosion on their way back to the elements of metal and earth.

Fish in my visual language is an ancient creature that reflects the antiquity of species, the fish as a pet is pulling its owner into the deep water of the prehistorical unknown.

The self of his portrait is located on the top of a ladder or a bike where, in spite of the rapid pace of an advanced evolution, a strong cord through his pet connects him to his deeper portrait in the unknown...."

A great honour for Olivier Cornet Gallery artist Yanny Petters who worked in tandem with designer Jenny Dempsey to create this magical set of stamps...

"I’m excited for the launch of ‘Changing Leaves’ when An Post will launch the stamps I was commissioned to illustrate earlier this year...

...I’m delighted with how the finished designs look, with a little sparkle of gold and the rich watercolours making the images glow. Thanks to the team at An Post and to Jenny Dempsey, the designer. The leaves are changing colour, it’s my favourite time of the year."

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to share the news that our gallery artist Yanny Petters , a leading botanical artist and plant portraitist, renowned for depictions of Irish wild habitats on verre églomisé and other media, was commissioned by An Post, Ireland's National Post Service, to illustrate a set of three stamps on changing leaves.

In their September Quarter newsletter The Collector 3/25, An Post's philatelic services explained that this " set of tree-themed stamps features leaves from three of our most renowned native species: silver birch , rowan (mountain ash) and hawthorn , capturing their characteristic forms and vivid autumn shades ".

The newsletter also stresses the vital part played by trees in Ireland, ecologically as well as culturally: "Various native tree species grow in Ireland, including oak, silver birch, ash, hazel, hawthorn, scots pine, rowan (mountain ash) and willow. They all have important roles to play in our ecosystem and, over the years, many of them have been essential to the rural economy and have featured prominently in material culture. Irish folklore is full of stories, beliefs and custom relating to these important florae, which glorify our landscapes and are at the heart of so much rich tradition."

The three stamps and the FDC below will be issued today, Thursday 25 September 2025.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery has been participating in Culture Night events since our foundation in 2012 when we opened our first space in Temple Bar. Did you know that the first official Culture Night event in Dublin took part in 2006?

This year the annual event is taking place on Friday the 19th of September 2025 and we'll be open from 11am to 10pm.

Our storage area and all its treasures will also be accessible during those times.

About the cultural significance of our building at No. 3 Great Denmark Street

Here is a good description of our recently-renovated building at 3 Great Denmark Street, as described by www.buildingsofireland.ie :

"Rising above the adjoining buildings, No. 3 Great Denmark Street conforms to the plot size and detailing of many houses developed by John Ensor (1715-87), the architect and developer who was involved in the development of much of eighteenth-century Dublin. The building retains a good doorcase, similar to others on the street. The appropriate timber sash windows contribute substantially to the architectural character of this Georgian house, and the retention of the original railings, gate and plinth, and steps to the entrance, all provide context, an excellent street edge, and contribute to the architectural and streetscape quality of this impressive street."

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that Eoin Mac Lochlainn 's sixth solo exhibition with us will open at 3pm on Sunday 7 September 2025.

We are also very honoured to welcome Catherine Connolly TD as our guest speaker on this occasion. The poet Geraldine Mitchell will also be present and will read 'Keepers', her poem inspired by the artist's work in the show.

Remembering the day Robert Fisk walked into the Olivier Cornet Gallery

A fascinating encounter with a great journalist on the 3rd of August 2018

This gallerist knows he's told the story before but August 3rd has always a very special meaning...

On this day on Friday the 3rd of August 2018, my intern Antonio opened the door to this softly-spoken gentleman who after taking a look at our show, Chiens Bleus, Chiens gris , a solo exhibition by the artist LEYHO, insisted on talking to me. I was very busy in the other room, preparing for a meeting. Anyway this gentleman wanted to talk to me about some of the 1916 photos taken by my great grand-uncle François Bost during WWI, which were also included in the show.

As he walked towards me in the other room, our storage area, where I was kinda hiding, I just went Oh my God, are you Robert Fisk? What are you doing here, but you’re not Irish.. I would never say anything like that to visitors but I just could not work out how a British journalist, an expert of the so called ‘Middle-East’ who lived in the Lebanon, and whom I had heard so much about when I was a student of Arabic back in France in the mid 80s, could possibly show up in an art gallery in Dublin and express an interest in an obscure WWI photographer. I had no idea then of the strong connection Robert Fisk had with Ireland. I had to apologise to Robert and explain a bit about my reaction...

I was so shocked after his long visit-I was really star-struck- that I walked out of the gallery and spent time in the Garden of Remembrance, thinking of what he was going to write in his article for the UK Independent.

The day after his visit to the gallery, the article was all ready but Robert sent me a draft for me to look at, he wanted to be sure that he got it all right, he was such a pro...

And here it was, “thee” article in the UK Independent, a couple of days later:

Later published in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, between headlines about other wars in the region:

To my shock and horror -Robert and I had spent so much time choosing which of my great grand-uncle's photographs should be published in the article-, none of these photographs were in the article. Instead the UK Independent team had included generic photos of WWI.

I emailed Robert straight away, and I got a phone call from him shortly afterwards. Something along these lines: "Olivier, this is Robert, am in Paris, about to board my next flight, call London and tell them I am very p***** off about the pics. I am counting on you, bye".

I am glad to report that all ended well and I did not need to use these words!

I was so sad when I heard of Robert’s passing in November 2020.

A year later, one evening, it was on January 6th 2021, I was exchanging a few emails with the great journalist Lara Marlowe reminiscing about Robert (Lara was his first wife) when we had to stop that fascinating exchange: The United States Capitol had just been assaulted, but that is a story for another day.

National Heritage Week 2025 with David Fox

Exploring our foundations...

The theme for National Heritage Week 2025 is “Exploring Our Foundations”, a theme which, as the organisation puts it on their website, encourages us " to delve into the building blocks of our heritage; not just the structures, but the landscapes and cultural activities that have shaped us. Heritage isn’t just bricks and stones; it’s traditions, landscapes, skills, and stories that impact on us and our communities. "

As the theme of National Heritage Week 2025 is centred around Foundations and their exploration, we have invited the artist David Fox , a member of our AGA group , to reflect on a recent painting of his: 'The Ridge of Capard', a large work measuring 122x92cm and featuring a walking platform across a mountainscape in Slieve Blooms.

The artist has written a short essay about this work in the context of this year's theme for National Heritage Week 2025. The text is now published on our National Heritage Week 2025 page. It is also be available at the gallery where visitors can admire the painting in question, alongside other recent paintings by the artist.

Visitors can also see our current group show on the theme of Art Deco: ‘ Out of Lines ’ which also features a new work by the artist.

Death of Capuchin Day Centre founder Brother Kevin Crowley

Portrait of a man who dedicated his life to the service of the poor

We were very sorry to hear of the recent passing of Brother Kevin , the founder of the Capuchin Day Centre for Homeless people in Dublin City.

‘Righter of Wrongs no. 4 (Brother Kevin)’ is a watercolour painting on paper, 65.5x49cm. Eoin Mac Lochlainn created this work in 2019 as part of a series exhibited in our touring group exhibition Drawing on Don Quixote . The work was purchased by a generous customer of ours who donated it to the Capuchin order when brother Kevin retired back in 2022.

Our heartfelt condolences to brother Kevin's relatives, friends and to his fellow Capuchin Franciscans and all who worked with this fearless humanitarian.

Congratulations to OCG artist Yanny Petters who is just back from the Internationales Hinterglassymposion 2025 , a very successful and fascinating conference at the Hinterglasmuseum Sandl , Austria. This community-run museum is located in Upper Austria, close to the border with the Czech Republic. It’s a beautiful area visited by many hikers and skiers but was also once the centre of decorative glass production.

" I met with artists, collectors, restorers and enthusiasts who love Hinterglas art, also known as Reverse painting on glass.

This traditional art is in safe hands with Irmgard Quass and Christian Grinninger and their team. Painting on glass is taught at the museum and the exhibition there describes the fascinating history of glass manufacturing and painting in the area in great detail.

I was honoured to be asked to give a presentation about my work and how I have developed my own style of reverse painting on glass over about 30 years. Thank you for looking after me so well with all the lovely lunches and cakes to keep us all going over three days of excellent talks and conversations ."

Annika Berglund is a Swedish artist based in Dublin Ireland, whom we have been representing since 2012. She has had 3 solo shows with us: Materiality in 2014, Interlocked in 2021 and Tapestry in 2024. She has participated in many group shows, such as Out of Lines , our current Bloomsday / Summer group exhibition. Her work is in many collections, including the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin .

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present its 2025 Bloomday / Summer group show featuring work by

Annika Berglund, Hugh Cummins, Mary A. Fitzgerald, David Fox, Nickie Hayden, Miriam McConnon, Sheila Naughton, Yanny Petters, Kelly Ratchford, Vicky Smith and Colin Eaton.

We have been blown away by the responses to the brief we prepared for the artists, solicitating them to create work in reaction to the art deco period during which James Joyce's Ulysses was published. This year is indeed the centenary anniversary of the 1925 Art Deco exhibition in Paris.

Most artists have documented their responses which we have published with the images of their work on the Out of Lines exhibition page.

This exhibition is once again part of the Bloomsday Festival organised by the James Joyce Centre, Dublin. We are very grateful to have been invited to be part of the official programme !

All are welcome to the official opening of the show at 3pm, Sunday 15 June 2025, Olivier Cornet Gallery, Dublin. The exhibition runs until the 24th of August 2025.

Resonance, a musical response to Nickie Hayden's Symbols of Revival

Connection between sound and space, between music and visual art...

Last month, on the 8th of May to be precise, we were delighted to host this gig organised by our ex-intern Enrico Geremia in collaboration with @Desert_Door69.

Featuring brilliant live performances by Myrrtle , Bel Maruxo , enrico! , Neevo , Harrison and Romane , Magpie and Psyrin .

The evening, a resounding success, was all about connection, connection between sound and space, connection between music and the visual art around us. Resonance was inspired by Symbols of Revival , Nickie Hayden 's powerful solo exhibition which ran at the gallery from 13 April to 11 May 2025.

As the music filled the room, it echoed the emotions and energy in the artist’s paintings...

Conrad Frankel's new solo show.

This exhibition marks the artist's return to still life paintings. In 2018, when reviewing the artist's solo show 'Road Trip' for The Irish Times, art critic Aidan Dunne stated that 'Frankel’s landscapes are modest, considered, beautifully judged and classical.' Later that year, the same art critic included the show in his round-up of the best exhibitions of 2018. The same balanced comment could be made of this sumptuous series of new oil paintings on linen laid out on board.

"...Everything is cyclical, and nothing ever lands. We go from winter to spring just like that, in a slow flow, around, again and again.For these last few years things have felt like winter to me. Covid, then the wars began, and all was sprinkled with a sense of unreality: there was nothing to grip onto for sure, like the side of a boat that admits no one from a turbulent dark sea..."

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present 'Symbols of Revival', Nickie Hayden 's new solo show.

This body of work marks a new departure for the artist who has been working in a more minimalist way of late. And yet the artist continues to imbue her work with a strong sense of empathy towards the world around her.

"... My painting and its underlying intentions are heartfelt. I have embedded healing symbols and incorporated elements from modalities like Reiki into my new work, I am channelling a positive, transformative energy that goes beyond the canvas. Art has an incredible power to convey emotions and inspire change, especially when it's infused with the genuine wish for healing, love, and tolerance that I am describing ..."

All welcome to the opening at 3pm on Sunday 13 April 2025. We are delighted to announce that the exhibition will be launched by Dr Rachael Hegarty , p oet, educator and broadcaster.

Annika Berglund's Information Networks I at Art Evolve 2025 Fair, RDS, Dublin, 4-6 April

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to showcase Annika Berglund's 'Information Networks I' at the ART EVOLVE 2025 Fair, RDS, Dublin, April 4 to April 6, 2025.

This work will feature at our stand no 27, alongside other works by the artist and by the following artists we represent: Hugh Cummins, Eoin Mac Lochlainn , Miriam McConnon , Yanny Petters and Kelly Ratchford . We will also showcase work by three artists from our AGA group: Mary A. Fitzgerald , David Fox and Nickie Hayden .

This beautiful textile work combines wet-felted Marino wool, cotton threads as well as gold- and silver-plated threads. Natalia Sikora, a volunteer at the Olivier Gallery Cornet, selected that work as her favourite and wrote a beautiful essay about it:

“... Berglund creates a visual for this process as ‘mining for the “golden nuggets” of understanding and connection’ which is beautifully represented by the bands of gold and silver plated silk thread spread across the fibres stretching over the depression in the panel. Only a single silver ring can be seen in the centre, potentially suggesting a special type connection with a personal meaning for the creator. The ligament-like ropes create an organic form reminiscent of a flesh wound and its healing journey as each side is seemingly being pulled to each other in an attempt to bridge the gap. In a sense, this image can be interpreted as an attempt of the individual to find their place in the world and their community as well as an appeal to humanity for a mutual interpersonal understanding.… ”

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to showcase Eoin Mac Lochlainn's 'Caoineadh/war no.2' at the ART EVOLVE 2025 Fair, RDS, Dublin, April 4 to April 6, 2025.

This work will feature at our stand no 27, alongside other works by the artist and by the following artists we represent: Annika Berglund , Hugh Cummins, Miriam McConnon , Yanny Petters and Kelly Ratchford . We will also showcase work by three artists from our AGA group: Mary A. Fitzgerald , David Fox and Nickie Hayden .

This painting, a charcoal and watercolour on Fabriano paper, 35x27cm, is part of a series, 'Wall of Tears, currently shown as part of a touring group show 'What do we want?'. The exhibition, a response to the increasingly dangerous geo-political situation in the world today, was first shown at our gallery in April/May 2024 and later at QSS Belfast. It was shortlisted by Gemma Tipton as one of Ireland's top 10 exhibitions of 2024 . It is presenty on view at An Gailearaí , Gweedore, Donegal.

The artist commenced this body of work back in 2021. It was then " an attempt to represent a soul, someone with dreams and ambitions, someone whose life was cut short by the Irish Civil war ". The initial concept resulted in a great solo show at our gallery: Cogadh na gCarad in 2023. Work from that exhibition was acquired by the OPW for the State Art Collection, and also by The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame (USA).

The initial project put recent global conflicts in perspective for the artist and, as he continued to develop the work, he " began to view war as a failure of empathy, a failure of humanity. And whatever the cause, when it comes down to it, it’s always some mother’s son, it is somebody’s sister or brother, somebody’s neighbour who is killed. "

Last year, RHA director Patrick Murphy selected 'Wall of tears', an installation of 32 of these portraits for the special exhibition ' Kites Above the Castles ', which was part of CAGA's Dublin Gallery Weekend 2024.

A selection of works from the initial series, ' Cogadh na gCarad ', will also be available for purchasing in our booth at Art Evolve 2025.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to showcase Mary A. Fitzgerald's 'Lamb's Tongue' at the ART EVOLVE 2025 Fair, RDS, Dublin, April 4 to April 6, 2025.

This painting, an acrylic on board (25x25cm), was part of our 2022 Bloomsday group show ' Outrageous, Obscene and Offensive '. Maisie Greener, volunteer at the Olivier Gallery Cornet then, selected that work as her favourite and wrote a beautiful essay about it:

“... Usually Mary’s work entails intimations about place and object while incorporating private sensations and experiences. Her iconography is rooted in the quotidian but notes how memory and recollection affect and modify these encounters. The overlapping of paint complements Mary’s philosophy that past experiences compound to affect the present.

Her chosen palette of red, blue and green hues almost challenge censorship chromatically. By utilising shades that should not work together, washing stains of pink over green, for example, Mary subverts colouring precedent: resisting aesthetic censorship. The colours should be jarring and irksome however Mary navigates this mismatch through the amorphous, irregular shapes with softened and rounded edges… ”

Yanny Petters' Heathland at Art Evolve 2025 Fair, RDS, Dublin, 4-6 April

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to showcase Yanny Petters ' 'Heathland' at ART EVOLVE 2025, RDS, Dublin, April 4 to April 6, 2025.

This work will feature at our stand no 27, alongside other works by the artist and by the following artists we represent: Annika Berglund , Hugh Cummins, Eoin Mac Lochlainn , Miriam McConnon and Kelly Ratchford . This painting is part of Petters’ body of work titled ‘ Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht, Twelve Irish habitats in homage to the artists who have inspired me ’ which was recently exhibited at our gallery.

This painting features -and is beautifully reproduced- in Dr Éimear O’Connor’s excellent 6-page review of the artist’s verre églomisé practice in the spring edition of the Irish Arts Review magazine.

“ Stained-glass artist Harry Clarke also had an acute eye for diminutive detail, as exemplified in his commissioned windows for Bewley’s Café on Grafton Street in Dublin, which, on close inspection, reveal the extent of his precision and creative focus. It is to these windows that Petters pays homage in Heathland, featuring burnet rose, bilberry, bell heather, sheep’s-bit, milkwort and tormentil (Fig 9). As a habitat, our heathlands are under threat from overgrazing and higher rainfall. Petters’ treatment of wildflowers in Heathlands - and, more specifically, of the space surrounding the flowers - is deeply reminiscent of Clarke’s inventiveness… ”

About 'Remains of Daraa' (oil on canvas, 50x50cm)

Miriam McConnon's painting ‘Remains of Daraa’ is part of her most recent body of work: The Refugee’s Armour .

It reflects McConnon’s focus on themes of displacement, memory, and resilience. The work is part of the artist’s broader exploration of human narratives, often tied to the experiences of refugees and those affected by conflict. This particular painting draws inspiration from the ancient city of Daraa in Syria, a site steeped in history and symbolic of endurance through adversity.

Daraa, located in Syria, was transformed into a fortified Roman outpost in the early 6th century AD under Emperor Anastasius. In recent times, Daraa has become emblematic of Syria's enduring struggles during its civil war. The city has witnessed violence, displacement, and humanitarian crises as part of broader regional instability. Despite these challenges, it remains a symbol of resilience for Syrians who continue to endure hardship while striving for peace and dignity.

McConnon's painting captures the layered history and emotional weight of Daraa. The muted tones and abstracted architectural forms evoke both the physical remnants of the ancient city and the intangible scars left by conflict. Her work often seeks to preserve personal stories and collective memories, offering a voice to those displaced by war. In this context, ‘Remains of Daraa’ can be seen as an homage to the city's enduring spirit amidst destruction.

By intertwining historical significance with contemporary narratives of resilience, McConnon's painting invites reflection on both the ancient city's legacy and its relevance in today's global struggles against war and displacement.

Other works from the artist's series The Refugee's Armour are currently shown as part of a touring group exhibition 'What do we want?'. The exhibition, first shown at our gallery in April/May 2024 and later at QSS Belfast, was shortlisted by Gemma Tipton as one of Ireland's top 10 exhibitions of 2024 . It is presenty on view at An Gailearaí , Gweedore, Donegal.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery and fellow CAGA galleries will be participating in Ireland's new art fair ART EVOLVE at the RDS, Dublin.

This exciting new event will take place at the Industries Hall, RDS, Dublin over the weekend of April 4 to April 6, 2025.

At our stand, no 27, we will be showcasing work by our following represented artists: Annika Berglund , Hugh Cummins , Eoin Mac Lochlainn , Miriam McConnon , Yanny Petters and Kelly Ratchford . We will also showcase work by three artists from our AGA group, namely Mary A. Fitzgerald , David Fox and Nickie Hayden .

Our carefully selected works on show for this fair will be within a range of price points to suit different tastes and different budgets.

" Floating in mid-air, yet anchored to the ground through botanical detail, clear glass provides the see-through ground for Yanny Petters’ work. Glass is a means to elucidate the space between, where air and light sing. Petters’ images are suspended in space, yet connected to the earth, so that her viewers see her world as a butterfly or mayfly might. Yet her creative intention is far more focused than it may at first appear. Petters’ upbringing, amid the wild greenery of her Co Wicklow home, with parents who were sensitive to climate change and deeply committed to teaching her to appreciate nature, led her on a journey towards the art of quiet activism on behalf of the natural world... The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that the Spring 2025 edition of the Irish Arts Review Magazine features a long article about Yanny Petters 's verre églomisé (reverse-glass painting) practice.

Dr Éimear O'Connor, Director of Collections and Access with The National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, wrote this beautiful survey of the artist's technique and intentions. The 6-page article, titled ' Art of glass ', is beautifully illustrated and some of the works are still available here at the gallery.

This important review of Yanny Petters's work is a long-awaited recognition of her place in contemporary Irish art and a huge honour for the artist herself and her gallery who have been working together since 2003.

A busy year for the Olivier Cornet Gallery and its artists...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce its programme of exhibitions for 2025:

Touring:

15 March - 26 April 2025:

' What do we want? / Cad atá de dhíth orainn? ', a touring group show, An Gailearaí, Gweedore, Donegal. Artists: Jill Gibbon, Bernadette Hopkins, Manal Mahamid, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Miriam McConnon and Tom Molloy. The exhibition, which was first shown at our gallery in April-May 2024, then at QSS Belfast in August-September 2024, featured in The Irish Times's top ten art exhibitions of 2024 in Ireland (Gemma Tipton, 15 December 2024).

Jill Gibbon, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Tom Molloy participated in the previous two editions of the show. For this third edition, we are delighted to welcome: Miriam McConnon , an Irish artist based in Cyprus and whom we represent, Manal Mahamid, a multidisciplinary Palestinian artist based in Haifa and Dublin since 2020 and Bernadette Hopkins , a visual performance and participatory artist and activist born in Belfast.

The exhibition will launch at 8pm on Saturday 15 March 2025. There will be special guests from Amnesty International and a new performance artwork by Bernadette Hopkins. This is a free event and you're all cordially invited.

Contrasts, Olivier Cornet Gallery winter group show opens 18 December 2024

New work, new explorations for some of our artists...

In a year of upheavals, combining -paradoxically- paradigm shifts and unchallenged status quo, the Olivier Cornet Gallery is presenting a themeless winter group exhibition, or rather one featuring many themes. With ‘Contrasts’, we will -more than ever before maybe- highlight the rich diversity of artists the gallery is working with, showcasing examples of their best work this year. The exhibition purports to assemble in unison a wide selection of contrasting colours, media and practices.

This year we have chosen Nickie Hayden 's new painting 'Healing Totems' to promote this new winter group show.

'Healing Totems' marks a new departure for this artist who has been working in a more minimalist way of late. And yet the artist continues to imbue her work with a strong sense of empathy towards the world around her.

My painting and its underlying intentions are heartfelt. I have embedded healing symbols and incorporated elements from modalities like Reiki into my new work, I am channelling a positive, transformative energy that goes beyond the canvas. Art has an incredible power to convey emotions and inspire change, especially when it's infused with the genuine wish for healing, love, and tolerance that I am describing.

It's true that the world often feels weighed down by greed, inequality, and environmental neglect, and it can feel overwhelming to try to make a difference. However, my work stands as a testament to the idea that change begins with small acts—acts of expression, empathy, and connection. Art has the capacity to awaken people, provoke thought, and spread a ripple of positivity and hope. Even if it touches just one person profoundly, it has made an impact.

OPW Ireland acquires Yanny Petters's Hedgerow

OPW Ireland acquires another work by Yanny Petters...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to share the news that Yanny Petters ’s work ‘Hedgerow’ (Bramble, Hawthorn, Wild strawberry, Honeysuckle) has just been acquired by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for the Irish State's Art Collection.

This reverse painting on glass (or verre églomisé) was part of the artist’s recent solo exhibition with us. The show, titled ' Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht' , featured 12 Irish wild habitats. Each painting was also an homage to an artist that has inspired Yanny since childhood.

Here is the artist’s note about this painting in the beautiful catalogue that accompanied the show:

"Hedgerows are vital wildlife corridors and an ancient hedgerow can support up to 3000 organisms.

In the absence of deciduous forest in Ireland hedgerows help to mitigate flooding and soil erosion and nurture pollinators with their wide variety of plants. They are an iconic feature of the Irish landscape and a wander along a hedgerow reveals a myriad of fascinating patterns and textures.

In the early 1980s I worked as a signwriter making painted glass panels and signs for pubs and shops. Patterns and plant motifs were commonly used and the work of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement were a rich source of inspiration.

I am paying homage to Morris by reflecting his skill in interweaving plant forms as he did in the tapestries he designed and the soft intertwining shapes in his wallpaper motifs.

I was delighted to see his work at the Victoria and Albert Museum when I lived in London. Now we can create such designs on a computer, but then it took mathematical precision to make a successful design and Morris was a master of this."

The OPW acquired ‘Hedgerow’ during Dublin Gallery Weekend 2024 , a 3-day series of events presented by the Contemporary Art Gallery Association (CAGA). As Yanny’s exhibition was part of that special weekend which ran from the 8th to the 10 ^th of November 2024, we were delighted to host 3 main events around the show.

A special talk ' Craft in Contemporary Art Practices ' took place on Friday 8 November with the OCG artists Yanny Petters, Annika Berglund and Hugh Cummins who were in conversation with the art historian Jean Ryan. Jean Ryan presented on ‘materiality, function and crafts relationship with the body’ and the panel of artists talked about materiality in their practice. A great conversation beautifully captured by Tony Kearns's photography .

On Saturday 9 November 2024, a very attentive audience attended a brilliant Nature Printmaking demonstration by Yanny Petters and on Sunday 10 November 2024, for the last day of the show (and of Dublin Gallery Weekend 2024), we were joined by various groups for an informal tour/presentation of the show and the artist’s career by Olivier. A buffet comprising of Korean food and home-made French ratatouille was served on the occasion.

Yanny Petters’s work has joined important public collections in recent years such as the National Gallery of Ireland with the work The Plants We Played With , the National Museum of Ireland with Hand Fan for Habitats and the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art in Kew with the work Three trees; Blackthorn, Rowan, Hawthorn and Teasel for Finches, November . The illustrious London gallery boasts 6 works by the artist in their collection. The OPW has acquired other works by the artist over the years: Yellow Flag , for instance, which is now in the collection of the National Botanic Gardens Dublin, and ' Field of Vision, Pyramidal Orchid ', which is currently hanging at Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland .

OPW Ireland acquires another work by Miriam McConnon...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to share the news that Miriam McConnon 's work 'Rows of Passport Tents' has just been acquired by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for the Irish State's Art Collection.

This work, which featured in Gemma Tipton's recent Irish Times article about the art of curation , was part of the same series of work exhibited in the artist's 2021 solo show at the Olivier Cornet Gallery. The exhibition, titled ' Displaced Privilege ', looked at the opposing narratives of the refugee and the non-refugee. The work incorporated personal objects from the refugee’s migratory journey, all visual testimonies exposing a commonality between the then global restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic and the constant reality for those displaced by conflict.

Mary Rose Porter, who interned with us a couple of years ago, wrote about this work as part of ' My Favourite Artwork at the Olivier Cornet Gallery ' series.

Please note that some of the paintings from the same series of works are still available for purchase. Please visit the Displaced Privilege exhibition page or the online edition of the show in our 3D Virtual Space. You can also browse our online catalogue of works by the artist on the Kunstmatrix platform.

In Ireland, the artist's work can be found in many private collections. Other works already feature in the OPW State Art Collection: for instance, The Gardener , acquired in 2016 and Two Syrian Roses acquired in 2019. The Office of Public Works also acquired a beautiful drawing from the artist's Lost Lace exhibition/installation in 2022.

In Cyprus, where Miriam is currently based, institutions such as the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture, have also acquired her work for their State Collection (see our previous blog dedicated to the work ' Domestic Partition '). Earlier this year the Municipal Art Gallery in limassol also aquired two paintings from the Excavating Narratives series from the artist's solo exhibition The Refugee's Armour at the Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos.

Back in 2018, another work by Miriam McConnon, a beautiful painting titled Threads II , was acquired by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs for the Embassy of Ireland in Nicosia. More recently, another work, titled 'Aaron’s Armour' was also acquired by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs for the same Embassy.

Congratulations to the artist who -just when we are publishing this blog post- has received the news that she is now included in the List of Ambassadors of Culture in Cyprus.

Annika Berglund's 'Tapestry' opens at Olivier Cornet Gallery on Sunday 17 November 2024

The work in “Tapestry” is not woven, but the theme centres on the basic elements of weaving...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present 'Tapestry', Annika Berglund 's new solo show.

In a recent interview with The Gloss magazine , the artist explained that " the work in “Tapestry” is not woven, but the theme centres on the basic elements of weaving, the warp and the weft. The warp encompasses the constants that create a baseline or continuity for life; which will always be with you, for good or bad. The weft, the threads that go across the warp, grow the fabric with each new addition. They pull together the weave and constantly create new patterns. These are events, people and circumstances that come and go; their contribution growing the weave and creating complexity, whether they just make a single appearance or are part of a recurring pattern.

In parallel and as a light relief from the work for “Tapestry” I have been working on a collection of jewellery combining felt with thrifted vintage beads. This work seemed to grow in parallel and in synergy with the Tapestry pieces, so I am showing them in a side exhibition in the gallery. "

Across Dublin, Friday 8th – Sunday 10th November 2024

Dublin Gallery Weekend (DGW) returns for its second year with a citywide programme showcasing Ireland's most exciting contemporary art.

For three days, Friday 8th to Sunday 10th November , Dublin's eleven leading commercial galleries will launch exhibitions by renowned Irish and international artists, as well as a host of family-friendly art-related events including artists' talks, panel discussions, guided tours, late openings, and much more.

Highlights include:

Kites above the Castles , a special exhibition curated by RHA Director Patrick Murphy. The group show features work by two artists for each participating gallery. Work by the artists Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Mary A. Fitzgerald will be representing the Olivier Cornet Gallery's rich palette of artists and practices. This exhibition will run from 8 November to 21 November 2024.

A conference with a series of talks around the realisation of the potential of the Irish visual arts sector (Saturday 9 November 2024).

' Fieldwork with Mainie and Albrecht '

Twelve Irish habitats in homage to the artists who have inspired me

In creating this body of work Yanny has immersed herself in the forms and colours which draw her eye to the many wild habitats of the Irish landscape. Her raison d'être is drawing our attention to the wonders and treasures around us.

While this new body of work is primarily about wild habitats, Yanny explores a common thread in her work over the last forty years with the inspiration she has drawn from the artists and creators she has admired since childhood: Mainie Jellet, Albrecht Dürer, Harry Clarke, Gustav Klimt, William Morris and the Moghul artists of ancient India to name just a few.

The exhibition will launch at 3:00 pm on Sunday 6 October 2024. All welcome.

We are delighted to announce that the show will be opened by Dr Éimear O'Connor (RHA, HRUA, BA, MBA, PhD), Director of Collections and Access at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin.

The exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful catalogue with an essay by Dr Hilary Pyle .

Earth Songs and Colour Poems, a solo exhibition by Joe Dunne RHA to launch on 8 September 2024

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Joe Dunne's first solo exhibition with us.

Joe Dunne RHA was born in Dublin in 1957 and graduated from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 1978. His work has often remained within the traditional genres of still life, landscape and portrait painting with recent forays into more stylised or abstract pieces. Dunne is equally accomplished in watercolours, oils and his preferred medium of egg tempera, and has also successfully explored print making. His paintings have won prizes at the Arnotts National Portrait Awards and the Keating McLaughlin Medal, for a group portrait, at the RHA Annual in 2006. He was awarded 1st prize in the inaugural Davy Portrait Awards in 2008.

Commissions by the Office of Public Works include his portraits of former Taoiseach Eamon deValera and of President Mary McAleese.

Dunne's work is included in the collections of AXA Insurance Ltd., The Royal Dublin Society, The Office of Public Works, Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, The National University of Ireland at Maynooth, Ballinglen Art Foundation Archive, The National Self-Portrait Collection, The Irish Medical Organisation, Dublin Dental School and Hospital, and The Boyle Civic Collection.

The artist is a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy and held the position of Principal of the RHA School of Drawing from 2011-2014.

"... Recently my focus has been almost entirely on abstract composition, principally a series under the collective title of Earth Songs which I began in 2020 alongside other related paintings. Underlying structures such as grids are often used. Geometric forms are frequent elements but not to the exclusion of other organic shapes and mark making. Such approaches connect the work to some of the oldest known paintings in human cultures around the world. There is also a strong correlation with some visual art movements and music developments of the 20th century. The aim has generally been to make poetic, lyrical or aesthetic works, to touch on some essence which may hopefully resonate with the viewer ..."

Yanny Petters's The Plants We Played With in new show at National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin

Shown for the first time since its acquisition by the National Gallery of Ireland

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that Yanny Petters 's work 'The Plants We Played With' has been included in the National Gallery of Ireland's upcoming exhibition 'In Real Life'.

The prestigious museum in Ireland's capital city acquired this painting through our gallery in October 2020 after showing it that year as part of a group show titled ' Drawn from Nature: Irish Botanical Art ', a beautiful exhibition curated by guest curator Patricia Butler , assisted by Janet McLean (National Gallery of Ireland).

It is a testament to the quality of this work that it was chosen to be shown publicly once again in the National Gallery Of Ireland, albeit for the first time since its acquisition.

In Real Life is curated by Anne Hodge , Curator of Prints & Drawings at the National Gallery of Ireland. The exhibition runs from the 17th of August to the 24th of November 2024.

National Heritage Week 2024 with Miriam McConnon

Connections, Routes and Networks

As the theme of National Heritage Week 2024 is centred around Connections, Routes and Networks, we invited our artist Miriam McConnon to reflect on her most recent body of work in that context.

The series of works was called The Refugee’s Armour and it was exhibited in September 2023 here at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

Our brief provoked the artist to contemplate the complexities of preserving one’s heritage and social culture amidst the ongoing global refugee crisis.

As a result, the artist wrote a short essay which is published here and at the gallery during National Heritage Week 2024. i.e from the 17th to the 25th of August 2024.

Some of the works referenced in the essay will be on view at the gallery, in our 'Artist's Booth', a mini exhibition space launched last year.

Visitors will also be able to see our current group show, Pink is my colour , in our main exhibition space.

Sketching afternoon at The Olivier Cornet Gallery with Artist Miriam McConnon

Date : Saturday 24th of August 2024

Time : 2pm – 5pm

The artist Miriam McConnon invites you to come and sketch with her at The Olivier Cornet Gallery in Great Denmark Street on Saturday the 24th of August from 2pm until 5pm. Visitors can sketch from a selection of objects that the artist has chosen or may bring an object that has meaning for them. The aim of the sketching afternoon is to examine the narratives and stories behind personal and domestic objects and how they are representative of our lives and our heritage also.

Visitors will be encouraged to sketch in a variety of different mediums. Children and adults of all ages are welcome.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to view the artwork in the gallery’s current group exhibition ‘Pink is my Colour’ as well as a selection of Miriam's sketches and drawings.

Group show 'What do we want?' going places. Next, Belfast!

'Powerful and so timely' says Christina Kennedy (IMMA)

So much has been happening with our exhibition 'What do we want?' that it is difficult to know where to begin.

Well, for a start, the singer Mary Black opened the exhibition on the 9th of April on Frances Black 's kind request as Frances was marooned on Rathlin Ireland on that stormy night.

Then, of course we should mention the fact that Jill Gibbon's work did not make it despite the artist's best efforts: Both her sketchbook and series of gifts (desktop toys collected at arms fairs) were refused entry to Ireland by Irish Customs. The artist was subsequently thwarted in her attempt to send -in an envelope by post- a facsimile version of her sketchbook: this item was also refused entry to this country. We have been able though to show these sketches through a slideshow in the gallery and we printed and framed Ricky Adam's 'beautiful' photographs of the gifts collected by the artist. The artist is now waiting for Irish Customs to get back to her with a clear explanation as to why they prevented her work from entering Ireland. We won't draw conclusions just yet.

We are of course very grateful to Gemma Tipton who highlighted Jill's practice and the fate of her work in a great article in the Irish Times . We are equally grateful to other members of the press for including the show in their listing: The Irish Arts Review magazine, Penny McCormick in The Gloss and Philipp Carton in The Business Post . We should also mention a very interesting article by Eamon Rafter in Rebel . Eoin Mac Lochlainn , whose piece 'Wall of tears' has moved so many visitors todate, has been writing a series of blogs related to this exhibition . We have been delighted at the great level of interest expressed by some schools and the great engagement shown by their art students when visiting the exhibition. A big thank you to Martina Leddy and her class at Belvedere College and Margaret McLoughlin and her students at Maryfield College . We should also mention the visit by The Friends of the RHA and the many great conversations about the show with other visitors such as Peter Fitzgerald from dnote and Christina Kennedy from IMMA. We were very happy to see Christina's comment ' Powerful and so timely ' in our guest book.

We are now very excited to announce that the exhibition will be shown at QSS Artist Studios & Gallery from the 8th of August to the 5th of September 2024. Congratulations to all four artists, namely Jill Gibbon, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Tom Molloy and Gail Ritchie.

Group show 'Pink is my colour' to launch at Olivier Cornet Gallery on 9 June 2024

A group exhibition that promises to bring out a rich array of bold and wonderful tones...

" The qualities we associate with the pastel color pink are quite diverse. They range from sensitive, tender, youthful, artificial or unreal to eccentric, vulnerable, and pleasurable. The color is at home in both "high" and "low" culture... What is unique about pink is that it is assertive in whatever context it appears ."

There have been so many essays and books written about the colour and its chequered history. Independently of the clichés and countless value judgements around it, contemporary artists make full use of it in all its shades, and more than people think at times.

Come to the gallery on Sunday 9 June 2024 for the launch of 'Pink is my colour'.

We can't guarantee the presence of Schiaparelli's 'Shocking Pink' but we can promise an eclectic art exhibition featuring work by:

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to share the news that two works from Miriam McConnon 's recent exhibition 'The Refugee’s Armour' at the Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos (Nicosia, Cyprus) have been acquired for two important collections:

'Domestic Partition', a charcoal on paper (140x170cm), has been acquired by the Cypriot Ministry of Education and Culture for the State collection.

Another work, namely 'Aaron’s Armour', an oil on canvas (70x55ccm) has been acquired by the Embassy of Ireland in Cyprus for the collection of the Irish Department of Foreign affairs.

Congratulations to the artist, the Centre of Contemporary Art Diatopos and the curator of the show Daphne Nikita.

Exhibition to raise awareness on FGM with artworks by secondary school students

Young People in Ireland championing the elimination of FGM

In March 2023, AkiDwA commenced the implementation of Chat Plus Project which is an EU partnership project on FGM that is focusing on changing attitudes around the practice. It does so by engaging young people to become the driving force in the elimination of FGM in Europe.

AkiDwA recruited 20 young people who underwent in-depth training on the topic of Female Genital Mutilation at the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission in September 2023. They have since utilised their learnings to carry out training and events in their own schools and communities. They have organised roundtable meetings with diplomats, delivered impassioned speeches at conferences and have begun designing a behavioural change communication campaign aimed for the Irish public and the affected communities.

As part of this project, the Young Change Makers have organised an art exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in Dublin on the 29th of January from 12pm - 5pm. The event aims to raise awareness on FGM by displaying works of art created by secondary school students around Dublin and Wicklow .

The 2015 European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) Report suggests that 1,632 girls are at risk of FGM in Ireland and in 2017 AkiDwA estimated that 5,790 women and girls living in Ireland had undergone FGM, based on 2016 data collected by Ireland’s Central Statistics Office.

FGM is illegal in Ireland under the Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Act 2012. It is also included as a form of Child Abuse in the Children First National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children (2017).

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a form of child abuse as well as violence against women and girls. Professionals working with children should be informed and trained to identify girls at risk. They should also be trained to recognise signs that indicate a girl may have been subjected to FGM or at risk of the practice. Such professionals include, teachers, professors, educators, Gardaí, nurses, doctors.

This wonderful painting was part of the artist's solo show ' Urban Fingerprint ' which took place at the Olivier Cornet Gallery is November-December 2023. OCG's Winter group show Compendium launches on 17 December 2023

Compendium, a review of all our shows this year

We are delighted to announce the launch of our 2023-2024 winter group show titled ' Compendium '. The exhibition purports to look back at all solo and group exhibitions that took place at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in 2023, or other venues featuring work by our artists this year.

The exhibition will also feature work by three artists we engaged with for the first time this year namely Conor Horgan, Fergus Kelly and Bart O'Reilly.

The show will launch at 2pm on Sunday 17 December 2023. All welcome. Please visit the exhibition page for more information.

Notre Dame's Hesburgh Libraries acquire work by Eoin Mac Lochlainn

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Indiana, USA) have acquired four of Eoin Mac Lochlainn's Cogadh na gCarad / the War between Friends charcoal and wash drawings on watercolour paper. These works were exhibited here at our Dublin gallery in March 2023, as part of the artist's solo show to commemorate all those who were killed during the Irish Civil War.

"The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame continues to build an interdisciplinary Irish studies collection. In recent years, the library has increased its focus on Irish art, working collaboratively with the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art (formerly the Snite Museum) and with the Keough-Naughton Institute of Irish Studies.

Our collection is print-based, including an extensive collection of Cuala Press and Dolmen Press works, and in recent years we added print collections from the Graphic Studio Dublin, and we also acquired a copy of David Lilburn’s limited edition print series, In Medias Res, The Ulysses Maps, A Dublin Odyssey.

Among our unique artworks, the Library has a nineteenth-century drawing album of the Edgeworth Family of County Longford. Images are shared on our digital platform . The Library recently acquired a manuscript book of botanical drawings by Daniel Charles Grose, created in the 1830s.

Our acquisition of four drawings from Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s recent series commemorating those who died in the Civil War, is an important addition to the collection. They add to the historic documentation of the era and of its commemorations, and also they are a powerful visual reminder of the human impact of war. We anticipate that they will be juxtaposed with historical documents as well as with other artistic and literary works for many class and visitor viewings in the coming years."

Highly Commended award for Hugh Cummins at show on climate and health

Part of a wonderful exhibition at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland

"Look after your health, Look after your meds, Look after the planet" is a recent work by Olivier Cornet Gallery artist Hugh Cummins . This wonderful piece has been awarded a ´Highly Commended’ at the recent exhibition/art competition ‘ Climate and Change ’ which was held at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, Kildare Street, Dublin. Many congratulations as well to Olivier Cornet Gallery artists Yanny Petters and Eoin Mac Lochlainn who also had work featuring in this wonderful exhibition.

Also congratulations to the artist Sorca O’Farrell who got a Highly Commended award too and who has another work in our recent group show ‘ 1515 ´ here at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

The first prize was won by the artist Erin Quinn .

For the exhibition in the sumptuous Royal College of Physicians of Ireland on Kildare Street, Dublin 2, a total of 48 works were selected by a judging panel chaired by the artist James Hanley RHA who was joined by Dominique Crowley, a Dublin-based artist and former public health doctor, and BethAnn Roch, a Fellow of the College and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland Academy.

Hugh Cummins's three-dimensional set piece in wood (7.5cm (H) x 29.5cm (W) x 21.1cm (D)) brings to mind the way small turned boxes were used to hold pills in the past, contrasting with the trend now to package medicinal treatments in plastic and aluminium which are harder to recycle or reuse.

The artist has combined different woods and laminated the thin leaves together to improve and upgrade the earlier Pill Box ( 1. Walnut and Lacewood, 2. Walnut, Lacewood, Burr Elm and Dyed Red Sycamore, 3. Walnut, Burr Maple and Lacewood, 4. Maple and Dyed Sycamore).

The platform is made with Tulip Wood and Poplar and is based on the trays used in former days by physicians and pharmacists to count and dispense medications. The tablets are formed from laminated Wenge, Mahogany and Poplar – some dyed red and blue. The capsule shapes are formed of Ramin and Mahogany.

A showcase of contemporary art in Dublin City...

As a member of the Contemporary Art Gallery Association (CAGA), the Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce the inaugural edition of Dublin Gallery Weekend!

Dublin Gallery Weekend is set to be a new landmark event for contemporary art in the capital and an invitation to discover Dublin’s contemporary art scene. Involving the 10 member galleries of the Contemporary Art Gallery Association , and taking place from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th November 2023 , this free three-day annual event celebrates Dublin’s contemporary art sector, showcasing the vibrancy of the capital’s commercial galleries through exhibitions and specially programmed events.

The inaugural edition of Dublin Gallery Weekend will include a programme of free to attend artist talks, performances, guided tours, late openings, demonstrations, panel discussions, family events, and social events. We invite everyone, members of the public, art enthusiasts and newcomers alike to visit, meet artists and learn more about art by embarking on a journey through Dublin’s best known art galleries. Stay tuned for our full programme launch later this month.

The Refugee's Armour, Miriam McConnon's new solo show at OCG

"...In her new solo exhibition at the Olivier Cornet gallery, Miriam McConnon presents the individual stories of young male refugees in paintings of personal objects that narrate their journey of displacement, of integration and of aspirations for the future. She brings a collective element to these individual experiences through the gesture of the exhibition. The work looks at the many layers to these stories, disenabling the categorization of ‘refugee’ to define these young men.

Over the past twenty years McConnon has consistently made work around objects that reveal a human story. For this new body of work, she has conducted a series of interviews with several young men who have been displaced by war. Together they discussed themes of trauma, memory, safety, politics and the shared global responsibility for conflict. She recalls elements of their past stories and their hopes for their future through the display of objects that express the different layers of these narratives. Her work acts as an agency in which to give a voice to these young men’s experiences and that takes responsibility for the preservation of their personal stories..."

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue prefaced by Dr Rachel Hoare , Director of The Centre for Forced Migration Studies, Trinity College Dublin.

A panel discussion will take place at the gallery on the 28 September (7pm to 8pm) with artists Brian Maguire, Rajinder Singh, Rachel Fallon and Miriam McConnon. The discussion will focus on the complexities of making artwork around the personal human narrative.

Please note that the Centre for Forced Migration Studies has invited the artist to talk about her body of work ahead of her exhibition at our gallery. A group show featuring work selected and reviewed by recent interns and volunteers at the Olivier Cornet Gallery

Launch of the show: Thursday 13 July 2023, 6:30pm at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

Availability of the show: Tuesdays to Sundays at the gallery.

In December 2022, the gallery introduced a new feature to encourage its interns and volunteers, mainly art history students, to write about their favourite artworks showcased in the gallery’s stockroom. These reviews are then published on the Olivier Cornet Gallery’s website alongside images of the work. This mid-summer exhibition will feature all of these works accompanied by the text created by this new generation of future art historians and cultural workers.

"... The title of this work, Passport Tents, conjures up an atmosphere of tension, turmoil and loss. Here the passport motif represents a temporary shelter. For those not in possession of one, the ability to shelter oneself from crisis is vastly hindered by the fact that a safe escape is not possible. The passport, for many, is the key for safe travel and refuge in times of violence and uncertainty. Without one, the chances of refuge diminish, leading people to take desperate measures to flee the danger. These clinical rows of international passports symbolise those individuals who have sought asylum, the personal stories behind them and the ways in which they have been let down ..."

"... For me, ‘Fischkopp mit Zerrewanst’ by Susanne Wawra represents both the encapsulation of a moment and the complex process of remembering that point in time. Memory provides a means of fluidity and change, a way to fundamentally abstract and reinterpret (whether knowingly or unknowingly) a distinctive event. Her amalgamation of photo transfer and painted elements in a finely-tuned colour palette establish a highly unique and captivating sense of liveliness which amplifies the wistful sentimentality of a captured moment ."

"... Despite being aesthetically attracted to the piece, I was particularly drawn to its meaning. Titularly, Mary discerned the innocent and pure connotations of ‘Lamb’, evoking fragility and newness. ‘Tongue’ however, to me, excites activity and pace. The two appear paradoxical and consequently open themselves up to multiple interpretations. When read in the curatorial context of the Bloomsday exhibition, Mary is perhaps suggesting that the impressionable and young are perceived, by agents of censorship, as being invited to participate in perceived obscenity; although this is only alleged impropriety and is essentially just an exercise of autonomy and creativity ..."

Arbour Essences in Anthropocene Dublin - Four new visions for our urban forests', is a group show running at the Olivier Cornet Gallery until 7 July 2023

The show includes new work by four of the gallery's represented artists, namely Annika Berglund, Hugh Cummins, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Yanny Petters with a small selection of works by Belvedere College's art students .

The exhibition is sponsored by Coillte nature and is also complemented by an outdoor 'pocket' urban forest installation in collaboration with Simon O'Donnell from the Urban Farm project at Belvedere College .

“ It’s been exceptionally exciting, stimulating – and humbling -- to assist, however indirectly, in the development of an exhibition by four artists as talented and as responsive to environmental issues as Annika Berglund, Hugh Cummins, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, and Yanny Petters, with a co-curator as generous, insightful and experienced as Olivier Cornet.

And, after many months of periodic discussions around the theme of urban trees, it’s been a breath-taking pleasure to walk into Olivier’s gallery and see such beautiful, poignant and sensitive work on the walls. Annika’s magical evocation of the unseen wood-wide web that sustains trees from beneath our feet, Hugh’s delicate use of wood itself as a material for subtly allusive art, Eoin’s heartfelt, heart-breaking elegies for individual trees loved and lost, and Yanny’s innovative and exquisite celebration of trees in Dublin’s historical topography – all engage us intimately with the role of trees in making our cities more liveable, healthier, happier spaces. And they all hint at the catastrophe we are inviting by tearing the interconnected fabric of life to breaking point.

It was an added delight to see the loving sketches of Katy apple trees by Belvedere College students, adding a dimension to the show that is both youthful, and rooted in the gallery’s location on the college’s property. And the installation of birch trees and ferns in the basement frontage showed visitors to the gallery how nature can bring vivid life to neglected city spaces.

In our panel discussion with the artists, we will discuss their practices and techniques and reflect on the relationship between art and environment, and how this relationship can enhance environmental awareness, without losing artistic integrity. I look forward to it very much. ”

Trees have always fascinated artists, and are often one of the first subjects children paint or draw...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present ' Arbour Essences in Anthropocene Dublin - Four new visions for our urban forests', a group show curated by gallerist Olivier Cornet and author Paddy Woodworth . Four artists from the Olivier Cornet Gallery, namely Annika Berglund , Hugh Cummins , Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Yanny Petters have been invited to create work around trees in an urban context.

The exhibition is sponsored by Coillte and will be complemented by a selection of drawings by Belvedere College's art students as well as a mini urban forest installation - in the outdoor basement area - in collaboration with Simon O'Donnell from the Urban Farm project at Belvedere College.

All welcome to the official opening at 2:30pm, Sunday 14 May 2023. Guest speaker: Pádraic Fogarty , ecologist and environmental scientist.

OPW acquires Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s video 'Cogadh na gCarad'

OPW acquires Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s video 'Cogadh na gCarad' for the State Art Collection

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that the OPW has just acquired a copy of Eoin Mac Lochlainn’s video 'Cogadh na gCarad / the War between Friends' for the State Art Collection. The 18-minute-long film (available in an edition of 3) was created in collaboration with filmmaker Don Rorke. It features about a hundred images out of the 1400 charcoal drawings created by the artist to commemorate the dead from the Irish Civil War.

The video was projected in the Garden of Remembrance on 3 nights in March 2023 in parallel with the artist’s exhibition of drawings here at the gallery . The video also features sean-nós singing by Sarah Ghriallais and Fearghas Mac Lochlainn.

Very few videos feature in the OPW state art collection which makes this acquisition even more exciting. A copy of the video can be seen at the gallery on request. We have also a few of the charcoal drawings in storage. Please contact Olivier at olivier@oliviercornetgallery.com for more details.

A project that explores the trauma of the Irish Civil War...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Eoin Mac Lochlainn's fifth solo exhibition with us.

'Cogadh na gCarad / the War between Friends' is a project that explores the trauma of the Irish Civil War. Over the last year Eoin Mac Lochlainn has been making charcoal drawings and developing a video projection for the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin to coincide with his solo exhibition here at the gallery.

An anniversary show in loving memory of Rosemarie and Se á n Mulcahy

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present this anniversary exhibition as we celebrate 10 years in business this year.

'2012 - 2022, a decade of exhibitions at the Olivier Cornet Gallery’, will feature a selection of works by our currently represented artists and members of our AGA group. The show will also include work by two artists who have passed, namely the painter Seán Mulcahy (1926-2018) and the ceramicist Freda Rupp (1946-2019).

For the launch at 6:30pm on Thursday 15 December, the gallery has invited Mary Pavlides, chairwoman of the Contemporary Irish Art Society, to chat with Olivier about the OCG’s first decade and the works he chose for this exhibition. All are welcome to attend.

'The Darkest Night', Sheila Naughton's solo show launches in November

We are delighted to announce that The Darkest Night , Sheila Naughton's first solo exhibition at the Olivier Cornet Gallery will run from 15th November to 3rd December 2022.

It will be officially launched at 6:30pm on Thursday 17 November by Valeria Ceregini , international visual arts curator and historian.

We are no longer an island on the edge of Europe but a tiny country connected to everywhere in the world. The overall theme of the exhibition is the current state of affairs in the world - pandemic, war and climate change. My work is concerned with our states of ‘being’ in the world, but is also about the act of painting itself as a way of processing events and a way of marking a particular time ..."

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce its membership of the Contemporary Art Gallery Association (CAGA) of Ireland and its participation in the association's first event: GALLERY OPEN, 27th October 2022.

The Contemporary Art Gallery Association (CAGA) represents private art galleries in Ireland which are committed to the exhibition of contemporary visual art, the promotion of artists’ careers and the expansion of a public audience. CAGA’s primary objective is to raise the profile of the private art gallery sector by raising awareness of its collective activities through engagement with collectors, the media and public bodies

For GALLERY OPEN, visitors to the Olivier Cornet Gallery will be able to enjoy Miriam McConnon's solo exhibition Lost Lace . They will also be able to check out our storage area which features over 250 works by all the other artists we work with. Gallery Director Olivier Cornet will give a short talk at 6:30pm to explain about the genesis of the Lost Lace project and its art exhibition at the gallery.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery, situated on Great Denmark Street in the cultural heart of Dublin 1, boasts a fantastic array of visual art displayed on the ground floor of a fabulous Georgian building. The public gallery consists of two spaces; one for temporary exhibitions and the other a public storage area that houses a treasure trove of cutting edge art both nationally and internationally.

'Lost Lace', Miriam McConnon's art installation and exhibition launches at Iveagh Gardens and at OCG

An art installation in collaboration with poet Jessica Traynor and engagement from the public

On behalf of the visual artist Miriam McConnon and the poet Jessica Traynor , it is my privilege as PR Officer on the Lost Lace project to announce that Lost Lace, a public art installation and poetry recital to commemorate the lives lost to covid 19 in Ireland, will be launched on Saturday 15 October 2022 at Iveagh Gardens, Dublin, Ireland.

TD Catherine Martin , Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, will open the event at 3pm on that day. Please note that Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy will also be in attendance. The Poet Jessica Traynor will be reading 4 poems (commissioned by Miriam McConnon) based on the stories of loss shared by members of the public on the project’s website .

The public art installation will remain in place in this beautiful public park until 23 ^rd of October.

Miriam McConnon documented her preliminary ideas for the outdoor installation in a series of large drawings in charcoal, colouring pencil and pastel. The drawings give a rare glimpse into the artist’s practice and thought process leading up to the finished installation. These drawings will be presented at the Olivier Cornet Gallery from 19 ^th October to 30 ^th October 2022. We are delighted to announce that the poet Jessica Traynor will also present her poems on the opening night of the exhibition, i.e at 6:30pm on Wednesday 19 October. Olivier Cornet Gallery is excited to present Claire Halpin's first exhibition at the gallery since her monumental Jigmap series of works was acquired and exhibited at IMMA in its museum wide exhibition The Narrow Gate of The Here and Now – Chapter Four: Protest and Conflict. This has significantly positioned Claire’s paintings in an international context of contemporary and historically acclaimed political artists looking at protest, conflict, contested histories and responding to the global issues of our times. It has also brought a wider audience nationally and internationally to her work and practice.

This timely exhibition – Augmented Auguries - brings together an ambitious body of Claire’s work developed over the last two years building on themes and concepts previously explored in her paintings. Responding to sites of conflict and contested histories internationally from the Pandemic, storming of the Capitol, to the war in Ukraine, now Claire turns her lens to national conflict and protest in Northern Ireland. The spectacle and theatrics of conflict and protest are documented and recorded through paint. The works attempt to navigate the complexity of the contemporary theatre of war and cultural wars as battlefields move to the battlespace of the online and livefeed of news, images and social media. All played out in the steady stream of content, real, fake and created by whom for whom and for what intent and consequences in recording future history.

The exhibition title – Augmented Auguries - links the livefeed of news and social media via satellite and drones to the ancient Roman practice of augury – the interpreting of omens from the observed behaviour of birds, and the sometimes fabricated auspices that could be used to pervert a political course of action.

"With the recent paintings I have attempted to respond in a more immediate way through a loosening of the handling of the paint, allowing a movement and blurring on the gessoed surface – a slight shift from the heavily worked complex compositions of the Jigmap Series. Attempting to create a painting of a particular event, incident, atrocity – contesting history and recording future history. All to the backdrop of the canon of art history, the complex compositions and multiple narratives of Early Renaissance and Byzantine painting."

The exhibition is accompanied by a text of conversations between art historian Dr Brenda Moore-McCann and Claire Halpin in her studio.

OCG artist Miriam McConnon launches collaborative art project to commemorate victims of covid-19

Call for members of the public who have lost loved ones to covid 19 to share their stories of loss

As part of phase 1 of her collaborative art project Lost Lace, Olivier Cornet Gallery artist Miriam McConnon invites the people of Ireland who have lost loved ones to covid 19 to write a message on the website http://www.lostlace.com.

The messages will be the inspiration for a series of poems to be written by the poet Jessica Traynor alongside Miriam McConnon's installation Lost Lace at Iveagh Gardens in October 2022.

Messages can be submitted until 31 August.

Through a press release sent out on 15 May 2022, we have now invited the Irish media, Dublin-based embassies, sports clubs and various support organisations to help us share the information that people living on the island of Ireland who have lost dear ones to covid 19, can now share their story of loss with Lost Lace: a visual art and poetry commemoration to the lives lost to covid 19.

Members of the public can indeed share a few words about their loved one in ‘Share your story of loss’ on http://www.lostlace.com from 1st May 2022 to 31st August 2022.

The words of loss that are shared on the website will provide inspiration for the poet Jessica Traynor to compose four poems to commemorate the lives of loved ones who have died from covid 19 in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The recital of the poems and the launch of the outdoor installation Lost Lace by visual artist Miriam Mc Connon will take place in October 2022 at Iveagh Gardens, Dublin.

Acquired as part of the '2021 Provost’s Fund for Contemporary Art'

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to announce that Claire Halpin’s ‘Prism Panopticon’, oil on canvas, 50x80cm (2014) was recently acquired by Trinity College Dublin for the TCD Art Collections as part of the ‘Provost’s Fund for Contemporary Art’.

We are reproducing here the great text Catherine Giltrap, Curator and Head of the University Art Collections, emailed to the artists whose work was also acquired as part of this fund:

“ Artworks in the Collection will be placed on display in various parts of the University - focusing on student areas and places like the Provost's Office for maximum engagement with students, staff, visitors from all walks of life and for all kinds of reasons and purposes. It will like all our existing artworks, live a varied life, being rotated throughout the College, building interesting histories and biographies in themselves with all the people they meet and with whom they will engage - they may find themselves being lent out to external exhibitions one day too. Know that they will live and breathe and move through our campus and that they will impact so many people's lives, this is certain. 'War Paint', Conrad Frankel's solo show launches at OCG on Sunday 10 April 2022

Work made in reaction to the recent loss of connection and community...

Remmidemmi, a solo show by Susanne Wawra at Custom House Studios, Westport, 17 March - 10 April 2022

Remmidemmi is a German colloquialism for exuberance, frolicking, antics - a noisy, busy indulgent shindig. Something is happening; people are moving, creating joyous chaos. They are celebrating, making music and dancing, having the craic.

We experience a communal high in these events through a life-affirming breaking out of the ordinary, the everyday. It has become more apparent that it is not a permanent condition but something ephemeral in our current situation.

German artist Susanne Wawra puts Remmidemmi in the context of these challenging times of cabin fever and lockdown fatigue. The exhibition shows mixed media paintings and works on paper, low relief carvings and small sculptures. The work is partly autobiographical, partly fictitious. Working from her family photo archive and found photographs, Wawra moves her protagonists around, and both creates and fills in the gaps.

The imagery draws on the black and white photographs from before the Fall of the Wall in Germany. A young man is playing the squeezebox at her parent's wedding and won't stop playing, while everyone is hoping for the DJ to come on to do the shimmy. The themes of the works created between 2016 - 2022 are social gatherings, get-togethers, and occasions.

This sense of togetherness, the permission to let our hair down, let off steam and live it up, is contrasted by work made in reaction to the recent loss of connection and community. So personified, Remmi and Demmi are walking away from each other. Yet, contrast is also what it means to be alive.

Susanne Wawra (b.1980) is a German visual artist based in Dublin. Working across different media, she explores the intersection between personal autobiography and broader histories. She employs photography, printed matter and documents from her family possessions and from abandoned private archives bought via the internet to expand on her background of growing up in East Germany before the fall of the Wall.

In 2019, The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) showed Wawra's work in a group exhibition titled "A Vague Anxiety" curated by Seán Kissane. In 2018, Susanne exhibited "Portals", The LAB, Dublin (IE) and "Living in a Bubble", Luan Gallery, Athlone (IE). In 2020, she showed solo "Fernauslöser (Remote Release)" in her native country Germany, as well as "Sitzfleisch (Seat-Meat)" virtually and physically at Olivier Cornet Gallery, which represents Wawra in Ireland.

The show officially opens at Custom House Studios, Westport on Saturday 19 March, 2pm to 4pm.

It will run until 10 April 2022.

Deck, an exhibition by OCG artist Claire Halpin at The Lab Dublin

A Collection of Found Playing Cards

Stemming from the artist’s habit picking up playing cards she has found over many years, Deck is a snapshot in time and place of a collection largely amassed on the streets of Dublin 1.

Making her own rules however, the collection spans continents. Every card has a back story, real and imagined. In different states of repair and decay, the cards are annotated with whatever biro or marker was closest to hand with where and when each one was found before being added to the chart cataloguing and mapping the collection in an attempt to complete a full deck. How can so many cards have been mislaid? Were they up someone’s sleeve? Thrown away in a losing streak? Did they simply blow away? Each card represents a redundant pack from whence they came.

In 17 years working in the area I’m not sure I’ve seen anyone playing cards on the street. In Claire’s short commute from her home in Summerhill to her studio in Talbot Street, finding cards and adding them to her collection, became almost ritualistic. For this exhibition Claire has chosen not only to fill the windows of the Cube space at the LAB with these cards but also invites audiences to listen to the stories she’s collected of varying “house rules” for old favourites and games previously unknown to her. The very act of installing the show in the window has led to heated debates about rules with passers by, some of whom were subsequently recorded at the card table in the exhibition.

Claire Halpin’s work explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting, video and installation. Recently acquired by IMMA, a common concern across her work is an interest in perception and interpretation of images. Her work raises questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting, photography, and the media in documenting future history.

This exhibition captures the artist’s personal experience on her daily journey to make the paintings for which she is best known while drawing on her fascination with cultural exchange, storytelling and social fabric.

Claire Halpin is a Dublin born and based artist, curator and arts educator.

In 2021, IMMA / Irish Museum of Modern Art acquired three works from the Jigmap Series for the IMMA Collection. They are currently on exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Chapter Four of The Narrow Gate of the Here and Now: Protest and Conflict at IMMA until November 2022.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Vicky Smith's first exhibition with us. Vicky is a member of our AGA group.

We will warmly welcome you to the opening reception for The Cold Bark Against My Back- an exhibition of new work by Vicky Smith on Sunday 6 March 2022 with an Artist's Conversation with the gallerist at 2pm.

Made over two years, these works are informed by the experience of the artist being a mother while trying to make work, the longing to go to new places outside the home, and life events as well as more collective feminist themes. Through the process of painting, making, sketching ideas, and writing her thoughts, Smith reflects on these themes to understand and make sense of the universe, in particular the position of women. She considers how our lives change in motion, leading us to one final destination. She considers Greek philosopher Marcus Aurelius’s question in Meditations: “What does nature hold dearer or more proper to herself than the invisible existence of change?”

The starting point for this new body of work is Smith’s fascination with stories of women in the news media concerning attacks, catastrophe, conflict, depression, desperation, domestic acts, loss, love, moving on, murder, resilience, survival and willpower. She is intrigued by how certain mass media stories about women resonate for women as echoes of their own lives. Women’s stories interconnect like the branches of a tree or a woven tapestry or the thread count in a blanket. Smith is drawn to the crisis in each story by how it is unpacked, as if each woman is unfolding clothes from a suitcase after a journey from girlhood to womanhood and beyond. Smith appropriates news photographs depicting these women, meshing them into paint, photo collages, readymade sculptures, annotated sketchbook drawings, and collages.

Two new Yanny Petters's works join the Shirley Sherwood Collection

We are delighted to announce that two verre églomisé paintings by Yanny Petters have been acquired for the Shirley Sherwood Collection at Kew, London (UK) following the artist's solo show at The Olivier Cornet Gallery in October-November 2021.

With these two acquistions, the Shirley Sherwood Gallery of Botanical Art -the world's first public gallery dedicated to classic and contemporary botanical art- has now 5 works by the Irish artist in their unique collection.

As shown by the photo, seven of our artists were able to attend the opening of 'Memento, Looking back, Looking forward', our Winter group show at Olivier Cornet Gallery, namely (left to right) Yanny Petters, Eoin Mac Lochlainn, Hugh Cummins, Mary A. Fitzgerald, Claire Halpin, Kelly Ratchford and Annika Berglund. The gallerist was very happy to be surrounded by so much talent and dedication!

The show, curated by the gallerist and his new intern Jordan Farrelly, features work by all our represented artists, as well as members of our AGA group and invited guest Jaki Coffey.

"...Before the pandemic I had already been looking at a shift in materials from clay, glass and bronze to less energy hungry ways of expression. Textiles and fibre arts worked well in that context and proved to work much better in my new, more confined creative space.

My work has always been informed by the character of different materials and in a dialog with their specific possibilities and constraints. Working with felt and mulberry paper turned out to be well suited for making in the domestic setting, but also appealed to me due to the symbology of how these materials come together..."

Jean Ryan is an Irish art historian who has a special interest in artworks which are influenced by literature. This approach enables her to introduce Irish artists from eras as diverse as the 18th century through to contemporary practitioners who are still influenced by stories of any genre. Through storytelling she has introduced people to artworks held in some of the best Irish museums, public galleries, arts centres, private collections and national institutions. Her work has taken her to places as diverse as Dublin Castle, Rua Red, Municipal Gallery dlrLexicon, Christchurch Cathedral Dublin, National Design &Craft Gallery, Kilkenny, and regularly at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in Dublin (with the feature Once Upon a Time in an Art Gallery).

Jean was on The National Storytellers of Ireland Committee. She has an M.Phil. In Irish Art History.

Yanny Petters has been painting exquisitely detailed studies of wild plants for the past 20 years, all of which from life.

Fascinated by colour, form and detail, her love and interest in botanical art stemmed from her work as a signwriter where plant themes were common in decorative design and the work included Trompe l'oeil techniques. As well as working in oils and watercolours Yanny also specialises in 'reverse painting on glass' (or 'Verre Églomisé'), a technique she has been developing since her signwriting years when she came across it through doing decorative pub mirrors and panels. The technique was explored by the Blue Rider group of artists in the 1920s who turned what had been a folk art into fine art. Indeed, artists of the calibre of Kandinsky, Marc, Klee and Münter produced glass paintings. Nowadays, there are very few artists using the technique as a fine art.

Yanny has had many successful exhibitions since 1995. She exhibited with landscape painter Michael Gemmell in ‘The Living Bog’ which featured her Paintings on Glass of Irish Bog Plants, at the Davis Gallery, Dublin in 2003. She was honoured to be included in ‘1000 Years of Botanical Art’ at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England, in 2005 as part of the Dr Shirley Sherwood collection. Since that she has had a paintings exhibited in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens, London, as part of ‘The Art of Plant Evolution’ (2009) and the 'Botanical Art in the 21st Century' (2014) exhibitions.

‘Field Work’ was a solo exhibition curated by Olivier Cornet at the Riverside Gallery in Arklow, Co. Wicklow in 2008. In 2011 Yanny was invited to exhibit ‘The Living Line’ at the Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda, Co. Louth, which featured large scale drawings from Yanny’s collection of works on a theme of wetland plants.

A number of her Glass Paintings are in the Wicklow Mountains National Park headquarters. In 2010 Clonskeagh Hospital acquired a number of Yanny’s works for their new nursing unit through the HSE Percent for Art Scheme.

In 2012, as part if the ‘4x4’ show at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in Temple Bar, Dublin, one of her paintings was acquired by the Office of Public Works for the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin.

'Floral Alchemy', a solo exhibition of her Verre Eglomisé paintings was shown at the Olivier Cornet Gallery in 2013.

In 2016 Yanny had a second solo show of Verre Eglomisé paintings at the Olivier Cornet Gallery called "Come with me, I'll show you something beautiful". Her painting of a Teasel was acquired by Dr Shirley Sherwood for her collection in the UK.

A solo exhibition in 2019 at the Olivier Cornet Gallery 'Hedgerow - stories from a linear world' continued Yanny's work relating to hedgerows, that iconic element of the Irish country side. It included Verre Eglomisé paintings as well as drawings and watercolours

Yanny has exhibited work in two exhibitions at the National Botanic Gardens in connection with the Irish Society of Botanical Artists: Aibítir: The Irish Alphabet in Botanical Art (2014) and Plandaí Oidhreachta; Heritage Irish Plants (2016).

In 2020, the artist took part in an exhibition at the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin: 'Drawn from Nature: Irish Botanical Art', curated by Patricia Butler and Janet McLean.

Yanny shows annually with the Olivier Cornet Gallery at VUE in the RHA, as well as the annual Watercolour Society of Ireland, The Dublin Painting & Sketching Club and the Botanical and Floral Art in Bloom exhibitions, the latter held during the Bloom Gardens Festival in Dublin.

Yanny also carries out private commissions.

Ciara O'Flaherty is a sociologist, art historian and artist. Interested in fundamental questions surrounding the nature of art, she began researching art collection as part of her studies at Trinity College Dublin to challenge sociology's dismissive approach to these dilemmas. This study is also an expression of her wish to further understand the interplay of creativity and consumption, a relationship which continues to gain relevance in a society seemingly determined to endlessly promote the latter.

"She's No Collector" asks: In a society which lauds rationality above all, how do those who employ their resources in a seemingly 'irrational' way become motivated to do so, and how do they consider their behaviour? This study suggests that it is unwise to generalise approaches to collecting and ownership, as a wide variety of indicators of intensely complex and individualised relationships between collectors and their art were found. The recurrent themes of social responsibility, memory, completion, the self, dispossession, and shame gave rise to two suggestions. Namely, that experiences of loss or dispossession in various forms contribute to a wish to accumulate in a profound and meaningful way, and that the ideology of social responsibility mitigates experiences of perceived personal shame connected to collecting.

This talk will discuss what this research discovered about the who, the what and - most of all - the why of art collecting.

Keely McLavin is currently a full time student, in the 3rd year of her Fine Art (BA) in TUD. She is also a practicing artist primarily working with paint and drawing. Her practice revolves around social and political issues as well as personal issues with identity, mental health, and gender. She has been volunteering at the Olivier Cornet Gallery for the last couple of months, mainly at weekends.

Botanical treasures in focus...

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present this solo show of verre églomisé paintings (or back paintings on glass) by gallery artist Yanny Petters . The exhibition will launch at the OCG on Sunday 10 October, from 2pm to 6pm in the presence of the artist. Please book a time that suits you by calling/texting or emailing us.

Guest speaker Janet McLean , curator at The National Gallery of Ireland , Dublin, will introduce the exhibition at 2pm sharp.

The exhibition includes 75 small Verre Eglomisé paintings proportionally similar in shape to glass slides used in the old microscope. Each plant is drawn from nature, a selection from the myriad wild plants growing on about half an acre, native plants which all too often go un-noticed, but which are part of delicate and precious habitats. They include Spring flowers like Celandine, Primrose and Cowslip, Summer flowers from Bluebell, Foxglove and Poppy to Forget-me-not and Clover as well as Autumnal favourites like Bramble, Rowan and Hawthorn.

About CUA:

Cua have spent the time of lock-down continuing to record remotely and have just released their third track from their upcoming album. The new song is entitled No Sequel, following in the footsteps of The Guiser's Fancy (31st Oct 2020) & Sunrise (22nd Jan 2021). Previous releases have been their album, In Flight Off The Islands, in 2019 following hot on the footsteps of 2017’s epic Songs Of The Hollow, again to critical acclaim.

John Davidson, Shane Booth & Ros O'Meara bring together dynamic and contrasting instrumentation and vocal arrangements. The group have an expansive acoustic soundtrack blending guitars, fiddle, bouzouki, percussion and 3 part harmony arrangements to create a world music folk styling that the group call Atlantean. Soaring melody lines, dirgy, intense a capella vocals and complex rhythmic structures will have the blood pumping through even the coldest of auditoriums. The cua live experience has been compared to the melodic intricacies of Planxty combined with the harmony skills of Crosby, Stills and Nash.

In the last few years cua have played 3 UK tours, two sold out shows at Celtic Connections, released two 15-track albums and most recently closed out Seán Rocks' Arena outside broadcast live from Dublin Castle and last week a sold out show at The Pepper Canister Church as part of Templebar Tradfest.

cua truly pride themselves on their diversity, with subtle nods to many genres, whilst keeping a folk, world, roots and traditional line throughout. All members are multi-instrumentalists and are inspired by many aspects of the musical spectrum including roots, blues, gospel, jazz fusion, traditional, bluegrass and more. Their approach to music is inspired by the history, landscape and peoples of the Atlantic areas.

cua have been recognised on a european and national level following their first two successful studio releases and are receiving national and local radio airplay in Scotland, England, Ireland, America, France, Holland, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany and the US. After a very successful run of ‘ Jam Havoc ’ in our 3D Virtual Space in March/April this year, Jaki Coffey and Kelly Ratchford are exhibiting new work for ‘Less Jam, More Havoc’ at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

The famous French newspaper selects the OCG artist's painting 'The Tailor' in an article on Ireland

The Olivier Cornet Gallery in Dublin Ireland is delighted to announce that the French publication Le Monde Diplomatique has selected Miriam McConnon’s painting ‘The Tailor’ to accompany their July 2021 article on the 'Two Irelands' in the context of Brexit.

This painting, an oil on canvas diptych measuring 35x90cm, is available at the Olivier Cornet Gallery, Dublin. It is part of a series of paintings created by McConnon when she joined our gallery in 2016. Another work from the same series and titled The Gardener is in the Irish State's Art Collection (through an acquisition by the OPW).

'Displaced Privilege', Miriam McConnon's current show at the Olivier Cornet Gallery, has been extended to run until 10 July.

Three of the artist's paintings join the collection of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin

The Olivier Cornet Gallery Dublin is delighted to announce that the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) has recently acquired three diptychs by our artist Claire Halpin who, on receiving the news, declared:

“ I am absolutely delighted about the selection of my work for acquisition for IMMA’s Collection - both personally and professionally it is an honour to have my work included in IMMA’s Collection - amongst the many great artworks and artists. For any artist to receive the acknowledgement, affirmation and support of their work by a national cultural institution is hugely important in their career, and for me for the Jigmap Series represents a significant body of work and development in my practice – knowing that the significance of this work has been recognised and will be exhibited at IMMA and brought to a wider audience for many years to come makes me happy and proud ".

Claire Halpin , born and based in Dublin graduated from D.I.T with B.A Honours in Fine Art in 1996 and completed her M.F.A at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, Scotland. She has exhibited widely in group exhibitions in Ireland and internationally including: 189th RHA Annual, Dublin; Highlanes Gallery Open 2020, Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda; Cáirde Visual, The Model, Sligo; Water Tower Art Festival, Sofia, Bulgaria; The Bulgarians are coming, Standpoint Gallery, London; The Palimpsest/ Rianú Project, The Pearse Museum, Dublin/ Tbilisi History Museum, Georgia and Artisterium VI, Tbilisi International Contemporary Art Exhibition, Georgia.

Most recently and significantly Claire was selected by international curator Inti Guerrero for 38th EVA International - Ireland's International Biennial of Contemporary Art 2018 to exhibit three large scale diptychs from her ongoing Jigmap Series including Syrial Serial completed especially for EVA International and exhibited spectacularly at Limerick City Gallery.

In 2018 Claire was shortlisted for the prestigious Savills Art Prize which is awarded to an artist who has produced an outstanding body of work in the last year, or made some other substantial contribution to the visual arts in Ireland. In 2017 Claire was also awarded the DLR Open Exhibition Artist Award by art critic Gemma Tipton at Arrival, dlr Open Exhibition, Municipal Gallery, dlr LexIcon.

Claire has been represented by Olivier Cornet Gallery since 2016 with solo exhibitions - Glomar Response in 2016 and Raw War in 2019. This multimedia show constituted a milestone exhibition in Claire’s career as it offered viewers a comprehensive survey of the artist’s attempt to navigate the complexity of the contemporary theatre of war and received great response and review from critics, artists, gallery visitors and general public alike.

Artist Statement :

“ My work explores themes and concepts around contested territories and histories through painting, drawing and installation. This current body of work attempts to navigate the complexity of the contemporary theatre of war as battlefield expands to battlespace in the information age. The means, methods and technologies of modern warfare from mass clandestine surveillance programmes to unmanned warfare and its real time reporting through the lens of the media.

The paintings use imagery from the media, surveillance, military history, maps, archaeology, early civilization, bible stories and from the canon of art history of Byzantine and Early Renaissance to weave together a narrative through painting. I am influenced by the complex compositions of space and time in Renaissance paintings allowing multiple narratives to co-exist in the same picture plane and use these compositional devices in my work.

I strive to create work that raises questions about how we choose to record history and the veracity of painting, photography, and the media in documenting future history. ”

As some of our scheduled exhibitions for Spring this year are/will be only/partly available through our virtual space within this period, we have decided not to organise any summer shows this year precisely to give these exhibitions a chance to be seen by the public when we reopen. As a result, we won’t be showing a new thematic group show for Bloomsday 2021 as has been the case for the last 5 years. However on June 16th this year, we will be presenting a special show in our 3D Virtual Space : a look back at the last 5 years of Bloomsday exhibitions at the Olivier Cornet Gallery.

The exhibition titled " Hold to the now, the here, through which all future plunges to the past " will feature a selection of works from “Portrait of Gerald Davis as an Artist” (2016), “There's a touch of the artist about old Bloom (2017)” , “Drawing on Joyce (2018)”, “Olives, Oysters and Oranges (2019)” and “The Morphing Feminine” (2020).

First, a few words about about Professor Dan Hicks, the developer and instigator of this innovative 125-day Twitter lockdown project:

Dan Hicks (FSA, MCIfA) is Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford, Curator of World Archaeology at the Pitt Rivers Museum, and a Fellow of St Cross College, UK. He works on the material and visual culture of the modern, (post)colonial and contemporary world, and on the history of Archaeology and Anthropology. Current work is focused on the politics of European museum collections, and the material culture of the “refugee crisis”. Dan Hicks is also a Non-Executive Director and Trustee of Museum of London Archaeology. He has published eight books , amongst which the excellent The Brutish Museums: the Benin Bronzes, Colonial Violence, and Cultural Restitution . He regularly appears on Radio and TV in the UK. About #MuseumsUnlocked

The project ran through the hashtag #MuseumsUnlocked on Twitter for 100 days initially, from April to July 2020. It was then resumed in the month of November with the 2nd lockdown. The project had themes - one for each day. Participants responded and posted images in response to preset themes, mainly to do with history, art and archeology. Interestingly, we were the only private art gallery in Ireland to take part in this great project. Although we were late comers to its first iteration, we participated daily in this "curatorial endeavour" when it resumed in November 2020.

'The Plants We Played With', Yanny Petters's painting enters the collection of The National Gallery of Ireland

Because memories can be sketchy, we paint them in our minds eye, we fill in the relevant aspects...

Olivier Cornet Gallery artist Yanny Petters created this exquisite work for 'Hopscotch', a show on childhood memories and children's games which we first presented at VUE Art Fair 2015.

The piece was then selected by the National Gallery of Ireland in 2020 for inclusion in their group show 'Drawn from Nature: Irish Botanical Art', a beautiful exhibition curated by Patricia Butler (guest curator), assisted by Janet McLean (National Gallery of Ireland).

The acquisition of this sumptuous work by The National Gallery of Ireland comes only a few weeks after The National Museum of Ireland purchased ' Hand Fan for Habitats ' (a verre églomisé piece) for their permanent collection.

A great honour for the artist -and her gallery- to have two works now included in these prestigious public collections.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, this strange period of isolation, social distancing and face masks, the artist became acutely aware of the special significance of human eyes.

"The eyes can tell so much about us, our fear, our frustrations, our compassion, but at the same time, the masks can hide so much. It can be more difficult to ascertain age, social standing, emotions..."

About Pearse McGloughlin

Pearse McGloughlin is an artist and songwriter from Sligo, Ireland.

He has released four albums to critical acclaim: Busy Whisper (2009), In Movement (2012) and Idiot Songs (2013) in collaboration with composer Justin Grounds while 2016 has seen the release of ambient folk-noir collection 'The Soft Animal' by Nocturnes. Pearse's work often deals in literary and philosophical themes; Idiot Songs drew largely from Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Idiot while In Movement reworks John Keats and Carson McCullers. "At the heart of this exhibition, Fitzsimons presents a new series of paintings formed using quadrilateral motifs. Each painting presents four, four-sided shapes side by side, each softly modified through form and colour – the tilt of a line from left to right, the deepening of a hue. These works are generated within a series of set rules devised by the artist – the ends of each quadrilateral can be either perpendicular or slope left or right – but even when working within this fixed set of parameters, the number of possible paintings this format could generate grows exponentially when adding variable factors such as colour... "

Revisiting previously exhibited works as the country resurfaces...

Following the social restrictions previously imposed by the state, the country is now reopening allowing many of us to go back to work or visit our friends and family again. Taking inspiration from these circumstances, we are 'resurfacing' pre-exhibited work by our artists, allowing us to give them a new lease of life, revisit them and think about our shared experience resurfacing...

The show, which runs from August 6 to August 28, features work by all our gallery artists and members of our AGA group. It also includes work by invited artist Mark Newman. Visit our Bloomsday 2020 group show in the Olivier Cornet Gallery's new 3D virtual space and at our reopened premises

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present The Morphing Feminine, a show featuring work by Aisling Conroy, Mary A. Fitzgerald, David Fox, Nickie Hayden, Miriam McConnon, Kelly Ratchford, Vicky Smith and Susanne Wawra.

The show will launch online in our new 3D virtual space on Tuesday 16 June 2020, 7:00pm.

The artists and the gallerist will be livestreaming on the gallery's Facebook page on Tuesday 16 June (7pm) to chat about the show and answer any online queries. All welcome to join in. The chat will be preceded by a live performance by Caitríona Ní Threasaigh who will join us as Molly from her boudoir at the online launch.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the gallery from the 17th of June until the 20th of July 2020.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present SITZFLEISCH, a solo show by Susanne Wawra, a member of our AGA group.

The show will launch online in our new 3D virtual space on Monday 18 May 2020, 6:30pm.

As the gallery reopens its doors -albeit by appointment only- from June 8, visitors will be given the chance to see the show ‘in the flesh’ from June 8 to June 12.

"Pioneering Irish artists are at the heart of the National Gallery of Ireland’s new free exhibition Drawn from Nature: Irish Botanical Art. From William Kilburn to Lady Edith Blake , the exhibition celebrates artists who made significant contributions to art, science, and our understanding of the natural world."

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to note that this exhibition features art spanning almost 300 years, from the 1720s to...2019! and that it will also include work by our artist Yanny Petters alongside work by 9 other contemporary Irish botanical artists: Mary Dillon, Shevaun Doherty, Deborah Lambkin, Siobhán M. Larkin, Margareta Pertl, Susan Sex, Jane Stark, Lynn Stringer and Holly Somerville .

Janet McLean of the National Gallery of Ireland commented, “While many Irish botanical artists ventured across the world, others barely stepped beyond their townlands. This exhibition highlights how they are bonded by a common curiosity in nature and a compulsion to record it. It celebrates centuries of looking closely, drawing carefully, and treasuring the complex beauty of plants.”

Guest curator Patricia Butler , author of Irish Botanical Illustrators & Flower Painters, on which this exhibition is based, commented, “There is currently a vigorous revival of interest in botanical art worldwide and this exhibition pays tribute to the extensive and distinctive Irish contribution to the area. I hope that visitors to the Print Gallery in the National Gallery of Ireland will enjoy exploring the work of over 30 artists ranging from the relatively unknown to the widely acclaimed.”

Last leg of the touring thematic show opens at Olivier Cornet Galley on Sunday 19 January

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present Drawing on Don Quixote, a group exhibition by the artists represented by the gallery and members of its AGA group. The show will launch at 3pm, Sunday 19 January 2020, Olivier Cornet Gallery, 3 Great Denmark Street, Dublin 1.

It will run until the 29th of March 2020.

An Olivier Cornet Gallery artists’ response to Miguel de Cervantes’ novel

The exhibition features new work by the artists represented by the Olivier Cornet Gallery and members of the gallery’s AGA group:

Examples of art inspiring art down the ages abound but it is particularly obvious with ‘the world’s first modern novel’: Jules Massenet's ‘Don Quichotte’, like so many other dramatized versions of the story, relates only indirectly to the great novel by Miguel de Cervantes. The opera in five acts was composed to a French libretto by Henri Caïn, itself inspired by ‘Le chevalier de la longue figure’, a play by the poet Jacques Le Lorrain first performed in Paris in 1904.

Massenet's comédie-héroïque, was first performed on 19 February 1910 at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (France). The French composer was born in 1842 in Saint-Etienne (Loire), a city where most members of gallerist/curator Olivier Cornet’s immediate family were also born and where he himself completed his secondary education,

The other appeal was the rich palette of contemporary themes in Cervantes’ novel as well as the art-inspiring-art connections: from Alexandre Dumas’ Three musketeers, through Picasso to more recently Salman Rushdie’s novel. Themes such as the quest for truth and justice in this era of fake news, notoriety and the accession to powerful positions by the underdogs -or perceptions thereof in the current re-emergence of populists-, the explorations of the troubled inner-self, love and how we relate to one another. The resilience of the individual (through desperate acts at times) against our modern-day malevolent giants, to the rallying to just causes and the emergence of the real heroes and heroines, have also provided the Olivier Cornet Gallery artists with a rich tapestry of materials.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to hear about the Seán and Rosemarie Mulcahy Collection bequest to the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny. We represented the artist Seán Mulcahy (1926-2018) and we are very pleased that one of Seán’s works, namely Placescape IX is in the bequest. Placescape IX (image above) was in Sean’s 2012 solo show at the gallery. See photo of the artist reading a newspaper in the gallery in 2012 with Placescape IX in the corner. This work was included in the exhibition 'The Seán & Rosemarie Mulcahy Collection' which ran at the Butler Gallery in October 2019. See photo here .
